It doesn’t get much more urban than the mid-range, 75-room S Sukhumvit Suites Hotel. Slick, shiny, and smack in the epicenter of Bangkok’s
downtown, the hotel is a great option for any kind of adult traveler – business
or leisure – who wants to be in the heart of the action, near bars, clubs, and
public transit. Guest rooms can be somewhat small, though sophisticated and clean with minibars, and some have lovely terraces with city views. The property lacks on-site features, such as a pool or gym, and is not a great option for families with small children. Families with kids could try the similarly priced Loog Choob Homestay, which has a residential setting though is convenient to major sights.
Scene
Mood-lit and night clubby, with slick surfaces and lots of black
Situated in an ultra-sleek, space-age-y steel and glass building smack in
Bangkok’s downtown epicenter, the S fits right in with the surrounding high rises. Guests include businesspeople, couples, and plenty of solo travelers seeking an edgy, high-energy home base. Inside, the hotel feels a little like a nightclub, with its black- and white-striped floors, glowing white walls, and futuristic black vinyl chairs. The slick look continues in the restaurant, Indulge, with its black leather banquettes and high-back chairs, low black ceilings, and tables topped with red napkins and black placemats with quirky slogans like “Keep calm and pig out." The restaurant's patio is friendlier and less intense, with light-wood chairs and tables, a sunburst-patterned ceiling, and bright green bamboo accents that make it a vibrant spot for people-watching.
Location
Surrounded by activity, including shopping malls, Soi Cowboy, and SkyTrain
Situated right on the
extremely busy Sukhumvit Road, the S is surrounded by urban action – bars,
clubs, restaurants, street vendors, and the elevated SkyTrain track running
down the road. Asok BTS station and the
famous Soi Cowboy are within a few minutes' walk. Terminal
21 shopping centre is a four-minute walk, and the newer EM
Quartier shopping complex at Phrom Phong BTS station is a 13-minute
stroll away. For tourists, all Bangkok attractions can be easily reached via
public transit: the Grand Palace, National
Museum, and Wat Pho are within 25 to 35 minutes. Suvarnabhumi Airport is less
than a 30-minute drive away (depending on traffic), or up to an-hour-and-a-half by public transit.
Rooms
A little small but clean, modern, and equipped with minibars
Rooms are clean and modern with light wood laminate floors and large
windows, though the heavy curtains can make rooms dark due to the minimal lighting. Decor is minimal and vaguely Scandinavian, with touches of pink, red, or floral-pattern against a mostly black and white palette. Beds are extra large and comfortable, with linens replaced upon
request. Every room has a flat-screen TV (some oddly placed),
free Wi-Fi access, safe, minibar, and coffee/tea facilities. Most rooms are standard-size except for the suites, which have
separate living areas. Rooms on higher floors offer great views of the city, and some have lovely terraces with woven loungers and tropical plants. The spacious bathrooms have glossy white or matte beige tile, long counters with square sinks, and shower/tub combos or walk-in rain showers.
Features
Free Wi-Fi, good restaurant, but no pool or fitness area
The S offers free Wi-Fi in rooms and throughout the hotel, and the plentiful
breakfast buffet (with hot and cold Thai and international dishes) is
included in some room packages. Indulge restaurant serves Thai and international dishes and craft beers and cocktails, and is popular with guests and non-guests for lunch, dinner, and drinks. The hotel offers room service from from early morning until late night, as well as in-room Thai massage service, laundry service, and
airport transfers for an extra charge. The S doesn’t have a pool, fitness area, or meeting rooms.
