Bottom Line

This laid-back, mid-range hotel on the southwest coast of Barbados has 31 studios and apartments, all delivering excellent views of the Caribbean from balconies or terraces. The Worthing Beach location is the property's greatest asset -- along with fully equipped kitchens in every room -- but it might not be enough to offset dated bedspreads and curtains, or the noise of honking cars buzzing along the busy highway. That being said, guests have access to two small, pleasant pools that are shared with the sister property, and there are a casual restaurant and small fitness center on-site. The Southern Palms has a larger beachfront and a spa, but not all rooms have kitchens.

Blue Orchids Beach Hotel

Scene

A budget-minded, low-key hotel that attracts families and older couples

The four-story, cream-colored Blue Orchid Beach Hotel sits between the busy Highway 7 and the tranquil shores of Worthing Beach. The sound of waves crashing and widespread views of the gorgeous ocean give the laid-back property a beachy ambience. Check-in takes place in a small lobby that's not much more than a front desk, some cushioned rattan chairs, and old black-and-white photos hanging on the white walls. The restaurant is a touch more charming, thanks to check-patterned chair cushions and bright-blue gauzy curtains inside, and granite tables with flower vases on the wooden terrace overlooking the beach.

Grounds, which are shared with neighboring sister property the Coral Mist (as are all amenities), are lovely and consist of plenty of charming spaces with loungers positioned to take in the scenic views. The hotel attracts mainly couples and a few families -- many from the United Kingdom -- who are attracted to the affordable rates and full kitchens in all guest rooms.

Location

Set between Worthing Beach and busy Highway 7, close to restaurants and shops

Blue Orchids is located on the south coast of Barbados, right off of Highway 7. It's centrally located near many restaurants, bars, and shops, but the busy road also means traffic noise and honking during rush hour. It's about a 20-minute drive from Grantley Adams International Airport  and there's free self-serve parking in front of the hotel. Guests without cars can request taxi service from the front desk or adventurous types can navigate the local bus system, nicknamed "reggae bus." Popular stops on the route include a 15-minute ride to Oistin’s Friday Fish Fry in one direction, and a 15-minute ride to Bridgetown (the capital) in the other.

For those who like to walk, it's a 20-minute stroll to St. Lawrence Gap or "The Gap" -- a one-mile-long area of restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Guests also have access to additional lovely stretches of white sand bordered by aquamarine water, as all beaches in Barbados are open to the public. There's a a supermarket within walking distance, plus Cave Shepherd mall is within a 15-minute drive.

Rooms

Dated but clean furnishings, plus full kitchens and balconies with views

The hotel's 31 studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites are located on the ground floor or accessed via stairs in two- or three-story buildings (those with mobility issues may want to request the elevator next door at Coral Mist). All rooms come with tiled floors and relaxed but dated Caribbean-style decor that includes old-fashioned bedspreads and matching curtains covered in bold, colorful prints. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with cable, and full kitchens. Kitchens vary in size, but they're well-stocked with ovens, stovetops, refrigerators, microwaves, and coffeemakers, plus all the necessary cookware.

Nondescript bathrooms are equipped with shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and bulk dispensers of basic toiletries. Sliding doors at the opposite end of the rooms open to charming furnished balconies and terraces overlooking the Caribbean.

Deluxe Studios are the hotel's standard rooms, offering a galley-style kitchen in the entry hall, a large closet, a room with two twin beds pushed together to form a king, and a private terrace with a small table and two chairs. The larger units -- some as big as three bedrooms -- may have queen or king-size beds, separate living rooms, dining areas, and bigger terraces with lounge chairs.

Features

Two pools and a gorgeous stretch of white sand beach

The hotel's highlight is its white-sand stretch of Worthing Beach, which is lined with several sets of loungers and umbrellas for guests. The waves can get rough at times, however, especially when the tide is in, in which case there are two outdoor pools with more loungers: one is by the beach and the other across the tropical grounds accessed via a waterfront pathway. On-site water sports, such as snorkeling and kayaking, are available, as well as beach volleyball and cricket. Guests should note that all facilities are shared with sister hotel, Coral Mist Beach Hotel, including the pools, fitness center, business center, and game room.

The all-day restaurant at the Coral Mist offers reasonably priced meals with a menu that focuses on local fare (flying fish sandwiches) and standard fare such as pasta dishes, salads, and burgers. The low-key spot has a tiny four-seat bar, plus two interior dining rooms and an outdoor terrace with terrific views.

Other on-site amenities include a small shop selling souvenirs, beach gear, toiletries, and snacks. The hotel can help with booking tours, car rentals, and cruises. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
