South Beach Hotel by Ocean Hotels

Inspired by the South Beach area of Miami, the property's design is certainly eye-catching. The Art-Deco-style lobby has lava lamps behind the front desk, a hanging glass chair in one corner, and chic white leather seating next to shiny gold accents. It's a welcome spot to relax, particularly thanks to a lending library under a flat-screen TV. There aren't a ton of common spaces, so guests not at the beach across the street are typically around the long, narrow outdoor pool. It has a shallow section with metal chairs and a table, and is surrounded by cushioned loungers, bright yellow chairs, and palm trees that certainly are reminiscent of Miami. 

The five-story building has a white facade with blue-tinted glass balcony partitions that face the pool. The ocean can be seen in the distance, but it's mostly blocked by trees and other buildings. The daily happy hour at the poolside bar and restaurant, plus once-a-week cocktail parties provide opportunities for guests to socialize. The property attracts a range of guests that appreciate its chic design and easy access to the beach. 

Located on the south coast of Barbados, South Beach boasts a central location off Highway 7. It's located across a busy street from Rockley Beach, where guests can use hotel vouchers for free loungers. Other lovely white-sand beaches are within walking distance, and all beaches in Barbados are open to the public. There is a restaurant, bars, and a convenience store within easy walking distance, plus, the St. Lawrence Gap or "The Gap" -- a one-mile-long area of restaurants, shops, and nightlife -- is about a 20-minute walk from the property. 

There's no on-site parking, so many guests choose to navigate the local bus system, nicknamed "reggae bus", which only costs $1 per ride. Buses are frequent on the road near the entrance and popular stops on the route include a 15-minute ride to Oistin’s Friday Fish Fry in one direction, and a 20-minute ride to Bridgetown (the capital) in the other. 

The hotel has 49 spacious units with chic, contemporary decor in a mostly gray, white, and olive green color scheme. Rooms are attractive and colorful, featuring light wooden floors, striped sofabeds, modern white furniture, and mustard-yellow chairs. All have glass doors that open to furnished balconies facing the pool and beach in the distance. Studios have granite-topped kitchenettes, while suites have separate living/dining areas with full kitchens; these come equipped with fridges, stovetops, microwaves, cookware, dishware, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, ceiling fans, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. 

One Bedroom Suite have a separate bedroom with a king-size bed, but these rooms are small and may feel cramped. Two Bedroom Suites are available upon request by having an interconnected Studio and One Bedroom Suite. Penthouse Suites are located on the top floor with better views and bigger patios. 

The narrow but lengthy outdoor pool runs along the front of the property with different sections of varying depth, including an area shallow enough for kids. There's even a whimsical area with wrought-iron chairs set in the water. The terrace wraps around the pool and offers cushioned loungers and umbrellas, which help distract guests from the power lines and less attractive neighboring buildings. Across the street is Rockley Beach (also known as Accra Beach) -- a popular stretch of sand with excellent waves and steady breezes. Beach chairs are available at no charge to guests as staff members at the front desk will provide vouchers on request. Guests can also rent water sports and snorkeling gear from beach vendors. 

A large area next to the pool provides an outdoor bar and dining area that attracts travelers from other hotels for both lunch and dinner. Poolside drinks and lunch service are also available from servers. A free breakfast of hot and cold items, plus dinner service are available at the air-conditioned Swagg Bistro. Guests can also order room service. 

A hospitality lounge is offered for early check-ins and late check-outs. In-room spa treatments are available upon request. Free laundry facilities are provided on each floor, plus Wi-Fi is free throughout.
