Bottom Line

The 22-room Yellow Bird is a mid-range hotel located across the street from a beach in the popular St. Lawrence Gap area. Units (renovated in 2015) have attractive contemporary decor, air-conditioners, flat-screen TVs, and fully equipped kitchenettes; they also have furnished balconies with jaw-dropping views of the turquoise water. A small outdoor pool with loungers and an all-day, open-air restaurant and bar provide more ocean views. The hotel has a central location within walking distance of nightlife, restaurants, and several beaches, but the water across the street isn't very popular for swimming and some late-night noise can be heard from rooms. Travelers looking for more upscale decor and direct beach access in the area can check out Ocean Two Resort & Residences, though rates will be higher.

Yellow Bird Hotel

Scene

Laid-back setting with widespread ocean views

A welcome respite from the chaotic area of St. Lawrence Gap, the Yellow Bird is situated on a picturesque and mostly peaceful corner that faces a stunning turquoise bay dotted with fishing boats. The four-story building (without elevators) is indeed yellow, and there's a carved wooden bird over the property sign by the street and adjacent beach. The main entrance in the rear leads to a bright, beige reception area with a few coral-patterned chairs, brochures, and books for borrow. Beyond the front desk is an open-air bar and restaurant that has ocean views and a daily happy hour.

The hotel received a makeover in 2015 and pulls in a mix of couples, families, and groups -- many who are repeat guests. Though it stays quiet on-site, younger guests will enjoy being close to happening spots with live music, such as the bar next door that plays reggae, and many more options closer to the hub. Some might be bothered by late-night noise from nearby clubs, however.

Location

Across street from beach in a quieter section of "The Gap"

Yellow Bird Hotel is located on the south coast of Barbados, at the edge the popular and touristy St. Lawrence Gap. Guests are within walking distance of the area’s best restaurants, bars, and entertainment, yet removed enough to experience minimal noise. Across the street is a pretty stretch of beach with fishing boats bobbing in the distance, but most guests don't swim here and instead head to either Dover Beach -- one of the most highly-rated beaches in Barbados and just a 10-minute walk away -- or Worthing Beach -- another lovely stretch of white sand that's also 10 minutes away on foot.

There's free on-site parking for guests, or local buses that cost $1 per ride are available nearby. It’s a 15-minute bus ride to popular Oistin’s Friday Fish Fry in one direction, and a 20-minute ride to the capital of Bridgetown in the other. The closest dining option is the Mexican eatery next door -- popular for their live music and margaritas. Also close by are nightclubs such as The Cove or the Old Jamm Inn for dancing. Guests wanting to stock their fridge are within a 15-minute walk of Massy supermarket.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms come with kitchenettes and furnished balconies or patios

The hotel has 18 spacious rooms that were renovated in 2015 to include porcelain tile floors, contemporary wooden furnishings, and granite kitchens. Units have either bright blue and green, earth-tone, or subdued blue and brown color schemes, but all are attractive and have artwork hung on the walls. A major perk are the glass doors leading to furnished balconies or patios that all face the ocean; higher rooms enjoy the best views but there are no elevators. Bathrooms were also renovated and have glass walk-in showers and rainfall showerheads; hairdryers and toiletries are provided.

Most of the units are Deluxe Studios, which have kitchenettes equipped with mini-fridges, stovetops, ovens, microwaves, and coffee- and tea-making facilities, as well as cookware and dishware. The Deluxe Two Bedroom units have two full bathrooms, plus a separate living room with pullout sofabed. Kitchens in these units are more spacious and have full-size refrigerators. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and clock radios. A large Penthouse Suite and Top Floor Deluxe Suite with a private roof deck are also available.

All-day dining in open-air restaurant, plus small pool with ocean views

The outdoor pool is small but never seems to be busy, and is surrounded by cushioned loungers and dining tables under contemporary brown umbrellas. Beach chairs and umbrellas can be rented, as well as water sports, from local vendors. There are no gym or full-service spa here.

Yellow Bird’s bar and restaurant, Cove Bay Cafe, enjoys ocean views and specializes in Western and Caribbean cuisine. It offers an a la carte menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus it has a daily happy hour; bed-and-breakfast packages are available as well.

Smoking is not permitted in the common areas, but there is a dedicated terrace with ashtrays. Wi-Fi is free, though it may be iffy in certain areas.
