Bottom Line

The 189-room Ayre Hotel Gran Via, located in a non-tourist area, is on par with other large chain hotels that cater to business travelers with an on-site business center, restaurant and bar, and three executive meeting rooms. Hallways and rooms have ample natural light and are elegantly designed with warm wood tones and gray hues. The hotel is located on a busy, unattractive street and guests in rooms situated on that side of the building often complain of traffic noise. Amenities and services are typical of an upper-middle-range chain hotel, but the facility does not offer a gym like the nearby Hotel Azul, which has rooms for competitive prices.

Ayre Hotel Gran Via

Scene

Chain hotel with elegant and conservative furnishings that caters to business travelers

Housed in a renovated 25-year-old building, Ayre Hotel Gran Via features a steel-gray exterior that's reminiscent of a large office building. The interior lacks the charm and personality of smaller hotels, but is functional and elegantly furnished with a combination of gray hues, pastel colors and light and dark woods. The on-site restaurant and bar is decorated in a subdued color palette, but stylishly designed with bluish-gray leather booth seating and elegant wood tables and chairs -- albeit some are slightly worn. The restaurant's sprawling skylight that covers most of the ceiling definitely sets it apart from other on-site hotel eateries. Considering its location and many business-friendly features, the hotel caters largely to those in town for conferences and meetings.

On an unattractive block in Plaza de España

The Ayre Hotel Gran Via is a convenient 11-minute car ride from the Barcelona El Prat Airport in an the area called Plaza de España, where guests are apt to see more residents on the street than tourists. The location is ideal for business travelers considering that it is a four-minute walk to the Fira de Barcelona exhibition hall and a one-minute walk to Mail Boxes Etc. Historical tourist attractions, shops, museums and restaurants are reachable using public transportation. The military fortress Montjuic Castle, which dates back to 1640, is a 27-minute trek on the bus and by foot. The Las Arenas shopping mall, an old bullring, is a five-minute walk from the hotel lobby.

Rooms feature black-and-white Barcelona photography, flat-screen TVs, safes, large closets, bottled water, and masculine slate tile bathrooms that are posh and spacious, but minimally designed. Suites have bathtubs, bathrobes, and small living rooms with leather chairs, comfy couches, and coffee tables.

Features

Three elegant meeting rooms with plenty of natural light and a business center

The hotel offers three meeting rooms that can fit anywhere from 10 to 90 people. Meeting rooms -- equipped with modern audiovisual capabilities -- are conservatively decorated with light gray walls, natural light, black chairs, and warm wood floors. The business center and meeting rooms lack color accents, other than the occasional red throw pillow or rug, and border on looking rather stark. There is a nice on-site bar and restaurant, but no gym.
