Bottom Line

Like most (but not all) H10 properties, there's a ton of style to like at this upscale property in Barcelona’s Eixample. The location couldn't be more central, with bars, restaurants, and some of the city’s most impressive architectural gems all within a five- to 10-minute walk. The 80 trendy, contemporary rooms come with air-conditioning, Nespresso machines, and free Wi-Fi, though some are compact. The hotel has a good number of amenities beyond the rooms, including a rooftop terrace with a small pool, cocktail bar, and great views over the city. There’s also a lobby bar and restaurant, though breakfast isn't included. Those wanting somewhere with comparable facilities plus a free breakfast should check out the nearby Hotel Barcelona Catedral, which has lower rates but less style.

H10 Urquinaona Plaza

Scene

Hip and trendy upscale chain hotel in a historic setting

This sleek property is set in a 19th-century building which has been carefully restored and was opened as a hotel in 2013. Inside, decor is impeccably stylish and trendy. The design blends the preserved original features of the hotel -- such as wrought iron banisters and stone columns -- with minimalist touches like glass panels, quirky modern artwork, contemporary angular seating, and a gray and yellow color scheme. The lobby features a bar, computer stations, and a stark plain-white reception desk which has neon yellow shelving behind it. The double, white-marble staircase framed by ornate railings and gold floral arrangements is a particularly eye-catching detail, especially as light filters down from the atrium ceiling above. All in all, this is another attractive addition to the H10 brand, and has a fairly unpretentious and calm vibe. The hotel is mainly geared toward tourists and attracts many couples from around the world, though plenty of business guests pass through as well.

Location

In the bustling Eixample, a short walk from Plaza Catalunya and Barri Gotic

The H10 Urquinaona Plaza Hotel is set in the popular Eixample district of Barcelona. It’s a neighborhood that's filled with a wide range of places to eat and drink, from casual sandwich bars and tapas shops, to international chains like Starbucks. Many of the city’s most popular attractions are within a five-minute walk, including Plaza Catalunya, the semi-pedestrianized Las Ramblas, and Passeig de Gracia, which features some of Barcelona's most stunning architecture as well as some chic boutiques (Gaudi's Casa Batllo is a 10-minute walk from the hotel). Alternatively, Barri Gotic is five minutes away on foot in the other direction, as is the stunning Palau de la Musica Catalana. For farther flung destinations, the Urquinaona Metro station and several bus stops are a two-minute walk from the hotel, and trips to sights like Sagrada Familia will take under 20 minutes.. It’s a 25-minute drive, 30-minute AeroBus ride, or one-hour metro ride to Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

Rooms

Fresh and contemporary, with air-conditioning, Nespresso machines, and minibars

The 80 guest rooms at the H10 Urquinaona Plaza are designed with a clean, crisp, and contemporary look. Most details are rendered in pure, plain white -- including bedding and most furniture -- though pops of bright colors like chartreuse chairs make a nice statement, especially as they sit on handsome walnut wood-laminate floors. Funky light fixtures and accents like single-flower vases are a nice touch. The rooms have high ceilings and get lots of natural light, and some upgraded Superior Rooms have incredibly detailed coffered ceilings with gold-foil trim. Standard Rooms are on the small side, though not unreasonably so by Barcelona standards.

All come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, Nespresso coffee machines, air-conditioning, and minibars. They also have a desk and some include a pull-out sofa. Superior Rooms have the addition of a balcony, and suites have whirlpool bath tubs. Bathrooms are small and simple, but equally modern and stark in their design. There's a walk-in shower with rainfall showerhead and a toilet, all surrounded by plain white tiling. One quirky feature is that the sinks and vanities are located within the bedroom rather than the bathroom.

Features

Two bars, a restaurant, and a lovely rooftop terrace with swimming pool

Despite being right in the center of Barcelona, there are a good number of features on-site. The hotel has the bonus of some outside space, in the form of a small vertical garden where drinks can be had amid a range of tropical plants. There's also a rooftop terrace with a small swimming pool and some great views over the city. The rooftop is home to a popular cocktail bar as well, and tables, chairs, and loungers are available. In cooler months the hotel also provides heaters and blankets to keep guests cozy, though the rooftop is only open seasonally. The hotel’s other bar is the lobby lounge, which is attached to the Novecento Restaurant, which opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and specializes in Mediterranean cuisine. The daily breakfast buffet is not included in the room rate, but has an excellent choice of hot and cold dishes, including croissants, bacon, eggs, beans, sausages, cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast, cheese, and meats. While the hotel advertises a fitness center, in reality it's only two pieces of cardio equipment crammed into a narrow room with a window. Three meeting rooms are convenient for business guests, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
