Bottom Line

The Hotel HCC Regente is a mid-range, 79-room property with a lovely early 20th-century facade set in Barcelona's central -- and upscale -- Eixample district. While there are plenty of original Art Nouveau touches throughout, most of the hotel has been renovated in a simple, modern style. Rooms are functional, albeit lacking much character, but some open to street-view balconies; others just look out to walls. The highlight here is the small rooftop pool with views of the city. Overall the rates are good for the area, but you may want to check out the nearby Alexandra Barcelona Hotel for something a bit more contemporary chic.

Hotel HCC Regente

Scene

Catalan Modernist facade with Art Nouveau touches and modern interiors

Dating back to 1913, the building that houses the Hotel HCC Regente is recognized as a fine example of Catalan Modernist architecture. The facade is indeed impressive and perfectly symmetrical with ornately-carved stonework, arched windows, and intricate wrought iron balconies -- though it's topped with an unattractive contemporary add-on. Although completely renovated in 2012, much of the original period charm has been retained. Visitors arrive at an entrance awash with Art Nouveau touches including lovely period stained-glass panels and traditional wall-mounted lamps. Inside the scene transitions to a more modern style with only the occasional reference to the buildings heritage with antique pieces and an old cash register. Two tiny elevators ferry guests -- largely vacationing couples -- to one of seven floors, including the rooftop terrace which affords panoramic views over the city.

Location

In the heart of upmarket Eixample right on the trendy Rambla de Catalunya

The hotel is situated in Barcelona's central and upmarket Eixample neighborhood, right on the trendy, tree-lined Rambla de Catalunya that is home to many fashion boutiques and chic restaurants. This great location drives up not only the hotel rates, but also the noise -- since the street is busy at all hours.

The hotel is within walking distance of several popular landmarks, such as the Casa Milà and Casa Batlló buildings designed by modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. For visitors who want to explore sections of the city that are farther away, the Passeig de Gracia metro station can be reached on foot within just a few minutes; this also connects to the El Prat Airport in 30 minutes.

Rooms

Functional but well-maintained rooms have free Wi-Fi; some come with small balconies.

Having all benefitted from the hotel's 2012 renovated, the 79 rooms are all functional and modern -- if lacking a little in charm. Rooms are air-conditioned and largely soundproofed from the outside, with some opening to pretty balconies overlooking the street, though interior-facing look straight onto walls. Amenities are decent, with free Wi-Fi, minibars, and large flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. While bathrooms are clean and fairly well-maintained, they look a little dated in parts.

Features

Rooftop terrace with small swimming pool and panoramic city views

The hotel serves a hot and cold breakfast buffet each morning in the bright and pleasant -- if slightly dated -- breakfast room; it's included in some rates but not all. On the eighth floor guests can flop on loungers on the rooftop terrace which also has a small swimming pool with great city views -- though it's only open during the warmer months and for limited hours. A smart bar with Art Nouveau touches specializes in wine and G&Ts and served a small selection of traditional tapas. Wi-Fi is also free of charge throughout the property. There's no gym or spa, but there are a couple meeting rooms.
