The five-story Hotel Montecarlo Barcelona prides itself on its simplicity, a theme that extends from its lobby to its guest rooms. It's no-frills, and that translates into few amenities for guests. There's no restaurant, no spa, no pool, and no real public spaces. The hotel offers 55 clean rooms in a location on Las Ramblas that's hard to beat, near Plaza Catalunya. It's outside the hotel that travelers will find the action; inside, the lobby and halls are quiet, in part because the hotel does not allow groups and limits the number of children on property. While the hotel is suitable for either business or leisure travelers, the location lends itself to those interested in exploring Barcelona rather than spending much time at the hotel.
Scene
There's little in the way of people, noise, or public spaces at the Hotel Montecarlo Barcelona
Upon arrival at Hotel Montecarlo Barcelona, guests may want to take a moment to check out the property's ornate exterior. The historical building was built in 1910 as a newspaper office and has been a hotel since 1945. It has received regular renovations since then to keep its stunning facade up-to-date. The number of rooms has been reduced with every renovation and currently stands at 55, making for a boutique experience that the hotel prides itself on offering. But despite the stately exterior, travelers should know there's not a whole lot going on once inside the hotel itself. The few public spaces are quiet and the amenities are few. Travelers comfortable with basic accommodations who prefer to pay less -- and be outside bustling Las Ramblas -- should consider the Hotel Oasis.
Location
Located on Plaza Catalunya, along a lively stretch of Las Ramblas
Situated in what's considered to be the hub of Barcelona, the Hotel Montecarlo Barcelona gets a top grade for location, at least for those who want to be in the thick of the action. This popular area makes for an interesting juxtaposition to the hotel's interior. While it is quiet and serene inside the hotel, it is lively and loud as soon as guests step outside and into the bustle of the surrounding streets. Guests have easy access on foot to many bars, cafes, and restaurants. It's within a short walk to the Plaça Catalunya metro station, making for easy city exploration beyond Las Ramblas. Those arriving from the airport can take the Aerobus bus shuttle; there's a stop that is quite close to the hotel. Also within walking distance are Passeig de Gràcia and the Barcelona Cathedral.
Rooms
Simple, clean rooms -- with a touch of old-world elegance
Rooms at the Hotel Montecarlo cover all the basics and add a touch of elegance. All offer plain white bed linens and wood floors, but some rooms have luxe details such as beautiful chandeliers and antique mirrors. Each room has either a double bed or two single beds and almost all incline with the press of a button (the beds in the Small Single Rooms are the only exception). Some rooms have lovely terraces and/or luxurious whirlpool tubs. Bathrooms are clean and come equipped with scales, hairdryers, and toiletries. Despite the double-glazed windows, some rooms experience noise from the street. Light sleepers may want to also take note that rooms on the first floor may feel the metro train going by. Rooms have mini-bars, safes, and flat-screen TVs. Each room has individually controlled air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi.
Features
There's a lack of amenities and public spaces at this simple boutique property.
Travelers looking to socialize at a Barcelona hotel should look for another property. Hotel Montecarlo prides itself on being an oasis of calm on bustling Las Ramblas and this translates into little in the way of public spaces or amenities. There's a bar, but no restaurant, spa, or pool on property. The hotel does not accept groups or pets -- and limits the number of children at the hotel at any given time. There is a breakfast buffet for an additional cost and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. A nice sun deck is also available for lounging.
