Bottom Line

The 81-room Hotel Viladomat is a mid-range property in Barcelona’s sprawling Eixample neighborhood. The location is within walking distance of many of the city's sights, and there are four metro stops within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. Rooms are spacious and clean, though they are a bit dated and don’t make a memorable impression. The same can be said for the on-site bar and the conference rooms, which are nice enough, but only average for a property at this price point. Guests looking to stay in the heart of Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella (Old City) can find similarly priced, more stylish rooms at Hesperia Barri Gotic, which also has a fitness center.

Hotel Exe AB Viladomat

Scene

Standard, slightly dated hotel with emphasis on business travelers

The Hotel Viladomat's anonymous office-building facade offers the first clue to the hotel’s character. It's a dated but acceptable property that doesn't make much of a lasting impression. The small, marble-tiled lobby has a large front desk and two comfortable retro chairs looking out onto the street, though the area is cramped and not ideal for hanging out. Oak paneling and green granite accents give the space an unintentionally vintage vibe, and the space feels merely functional, right down to the generic Barcelona-centric trinkets for sale. A dining area and bar -- up a small set of stairs just off the lobby -- provide the only other common space in the hotel. The majority of guests here are business travelers, though it does get a trickle of tourists as well.

Location

Central location in the Eixample neighborhood, near several metro stops

Located in Barcelona’s sprawling Eixample neighborhood, this hotel is a 10-minute walk from four metro stations, and trips from the Urgell station to Plaza Catalunya take just six minutes. From there, connections are available to Barcelona’s Barceloneta beach and to landmarks such as Sagrada Familia Cathedral. The area around the hotel is a mixture of historic and modern architecture, and local gems such as Can Valles -- a small restaurant that churns out amazing classic Spanish dishes -- are within blocks. The upscale Passeig de Gracia pedestrian shopping street takes about 20 minutes to reach on foot, as does MACBA, Barcelona’s contemporary art museum. El Prat International Airport is 20 minutes away by taxi or 40 minutes on the Aerobus from Plaza Catalunya.

Rooms

Clean and simple rooms with average amenities and large marble bathrooms

The guest rooms are clean and spacious, with the same anonymous quality that dominates the common areas. Superior Rooms offer wall-to-wall windows with extra space and seating. Matrimonial Rooms are also large, though despite their name, there’s nothing truly romantic about them.

All rooms have dark laminate floors, mocha accent walls hung with reproductions of famous Catalan paintings, and oak-veneer furniture. Rooms are equipped with double or twin beds, desks, contemporary upholstered chairs, large built-in desks, minibars, safes, and medium flat-screen TVs. Cribs are available for guests with infants, free of charge. Bathrooms are big and have marble tiles and vanities and bathtub/shower combos, though we did notice some mold and mildew in the grout.

Some rooms show wear and tear, including chipped baseboard molding. Additionally, many rooms pick up noise from the street and from guests in neighboring rooms.

Features

On-site meeting rooms and bar with cocktails and coffee

A good deal of the amenities at the Hotel Viladomat target business travelers, including two on-site meeting rooms with audiovisual equipment for large and small events and business center. Wi-i is free throughout the property and on-site parking is available for a fee.

The dining area serves a breakfast buffet in the morning (for a fee), and while the space has great street views and bright, contemporary furniture, it can’t shake its generic, chain-hotel vibe. Breakfast is only included with certain bookings and several cafes in the area offer a more reasonable deal. Limited room service is also available. The dining area includes an on-site bar, which is fine for a nightcap.

Unlike many similarly rated Barcelona hotels, there's no fitness center on-site. However, the hotel does offer laundry and dry cleaning services as well as airport shuttle transfers (for a fee). Free newspapers are provided in the lobby, and the 24-hour front desk can provide concierge services.
