Bottom Line

The Oriente Atiram is a mid-range hotel housed in a 19th-century convent on Las Ramblas, Barcelona's major pedestrian boulevard lined with shops, cafes, and sights. Built in 1846, the 147-room hotel was totally refurbished in 2009. It offers an amazing location, within a short walk of La Boqueria market and various other tourist draws, as well as the Liceu metro station. The buffet breakfast, while not included in the room rate, is served in a stunning atrium area, and the hotel has a casual indoor bar, as well as terrace dining on the street. Guest rooms are minimal and clean, with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning; Ramblas Rooms have balconies overlooking the action on Las Ramblas. The hotel is a good value for its category and location, but lacks a fitness center and high style.

Oriente Atiram

Scene

Refurbished former convent on Las Ramblas with broad, bright interiors

The hotel's five floors are arrayed inside a 19th-century convent which was restored in 2009. The historical building has a muted stone facade and an ornately carved wood-framed front door lit by elegant lanterns. When guests enter the hotel, the building's history is immediately evident in columns, arches, marble flooring, and a broad marble staircase with a wrought-iron railing. The lobby is spacious, airy, and modern, with white and brown marble, sheer blue curtains, gray-striped couches, and glass tables against tall windows. The corridors are full of brightly colored paintings by different artists, and have black-and-white marble checkerboard floors. The Atrium bar and outdoor terrace have simple black patio furniture, while the atrium-style breakfast room is stunning, with loads of natural light flooding in through the ceiling. Guests are mainly tourists, who are out and about during the day.

Location

On Las Ramblas, minutes' walk from La Boqueria and other major sights

The hotel is set on Las Ramblas, right near the architecturally compelling Gothic Quarter, and surrounded by street vendors, shops, and cafes shaded by tall leafy trees. La Boqueria market is just a few minutes' walk away, and the Plaza Catalunya is seven minutes away by metro, or an 11-minute walk. Guests can reach the Port Vell of Barcelona -- the city's harbor -- on foot in 15 minutes. The Liceu metro station is a few minutes' walk from the hotel. Barcelona–El Prat Airport is a 15- to 30-minute drive away.

Rooms

Simple and clean, with flat-screen TVs and minimal decor

Other than the Ramblas Rooms -- which have balconies overlooking Las Ramblas -- and Ramblas Deluxe Rooms -- with free minibars -- the guest rooms at Husa Oriente hotel are quite simple. All are decorated with pale wood floors, white bedding, and -- in most cases -- colorful touches ranging from bright fuchsia benches to royal blue or red throw pillows. All have flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, air-conditioning, and safes. Family rooms are available for up to four guests, and have separate showers and tubs -- otherwise, rooms have shower/tub combos or stall showers. Bathrooms, too, are very simple, with black-tile floors against white walls and all-white appliances. Some rooms face a wall, but these can be quieter than courtyard-facing rooms. Rooms at the back of the hotel are also quieter.

Features

Meeting space with piano, stunning breakfast room, and great location

The location is great, and guests will find themselves within an easy walk of most sights. The meeting room can fit up to 300 people, and has beautiful checkerboard floors and green accents, along with a small upstairs space with stained glass and a wooden piano. The breakfast room is also impressive -- located in a former cloister restored with a nod to the Louvre, it has a stunning atrium-type ceiling, and columned doorways playfully painted on the white walls. The breakfast buffet is not included in the rate, but it offers an array of hot and cold items, such as eggs, bacon, fruit, and pastries. The restaurant is open to the public and serves regional cuisine -- including on a terrace which is open from March to November. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The Atrium Bar serves cocktails, wine, and beer indoors.
