The 47-room Santa Marta Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl property with an excellent location between Barri Gotic and the beaches of Barceloneta. Guests can easily walk to numerous restaurants and bars, as well as attractions. Rooms are basic and simple, but modern, with neutral beige color schemes, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning. Some have balconies. A breakfast buffet is served daily, but that's about it for features. Most guests stay here for the location and reasonable rates. Travelers looking for a more colorful, stylish hotel could check out the nearby Chic & Basic Born, which has a restaurant and bar.
Scene
Modern hotel that's a good home base for exploring or beach-goers
The Santa Marta is housed in an eight-story stone building that's more than a century old, but the hotel is modern and fresh inside thanks to a 2015 overhaul. Guests enter through sliding glass doors. The lobby is sunny and bright, with a tiled floor and white walls. Large windows look out onto the street. Several seating areas with cushy sofas and chairs provide places for guests to hang out, though it's not likely you'll see many doing that. There are few features here and rather than being a social hub, it's more of a sharp place to crash between days exploring (or nights partying in the nearby Born district). With its central location and reasonable rates, this hotel attracts all sorts of tourists, including couples, families, individuals, and groups.
Location
Excellent location between Barri Gotic and beaches of Barceloneta
This hotel is situated between Barri Gotic and the beaches of Barceloneta. It's surrounded by other hotels, restaurants, and bars, and the harbor is only a five-minute walk away -- a perfect area for strolling. The Picasso Museum can be reached in five minutes on foot, and the Gothic Quarter in about 10 minutes. There are plenty of trendy bars, cafes, and nightclubs just across Passeig de Colom, in the hip El Born district as well. Other nearby attractions include Ciutadella Park and the Maremagnum shopping center. Gaudi's famed Sagrada Familia is 15 minutes away by car or 30 minutes by public transportation (the closest metro station, Barceloneta, is a three-minute walk from the hotel). It takes about 20 minutes to reach the beach on foot. Barcelona-El Prat Airport is a 20-minute drive, or 50 minutes away by public transportation.
Rooms
Simple, fresh rooms with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and safes -- some have balconies
The hotel offers twin, double, triple, and quadruple rooms, though the look is uniform across the board. All are decorated in a neutral beige palette, with wallpapered accent walls adding a little visual flair. Floors are light wood and the clean-lined modern furniture comes in matching blonde tones. There's little in the way of art, and the style is fresh, but minimally adorned. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, safes (fee), and work desks. Bathrooms are contemporary and equipped with vessel sinks, toiletries in little packets, hairdryers, and a shower or shower/tub combo. Some rooms have balconies.
Features
Breakfast buffet (fee), pets allowed for free, free Wi-Fi, parking for a fee
This simple hotel doesn't offer much in the way of features, but a breakfast buffet (fee) is served in the breakfast room daily. Unfortunately, the choices for breakfast are limited and most guests report the quality lacking. Pets are allowed for free, and there's a ticket desk beside reception for tour bookings. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Parking is available nearby for a fee.
