Bottom Line

This lovely 33-room country estate turned hotel attracts an upscale clientele seeking privacy and close proximity to Bath. Located just north of the city center, the independently owned property is surrounded by four acres of splendid gardens and houses a restaurant along with a posh spa. There’s an indoor pool and seasonal outdoor pool. The guest rooms are classically British with modern amenities -- including free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs -- and the common areas ooze old-world charm with antique accents, fireplaces, and original oil paintings from the collection of millionaire philanthropist and owner Andrew Brownsword.

The Bath Priory

Scene

Class and charm in an upscale manor

Everything about the Bath Priory speaks to well-mannered manor living. The wrought-iron gated circular drive leading up to this estate's impressive Gothic-inspired entrance gives arriving guests a sense that they’re pulling into a place of distinction. (The pricey cars parked out front also make clear the upscale patronage of this hotel.) There are plenty of common areas for guests, including the classic Drawing Room that looks a bit like an art museum thanks to all the magnificent original oil paintings adorning the walls and the antiques strewn about. The room has multiple seating arrangements, a chandelier, a fireplace, and big windows framed by sweeping drapes with elegant valances. There’s also a study, equally rich with artwork, plush armchairs, and, of course, books. While children are allowed at The Bath Priory, it's probably best suited for more mature travelers on holiday or in town for business.

Location

Located on a quiet country road just north of Bath

Located just on the outskirts of the city, this hotel gives guests easy access to all Bath has to offer, coupled with the feeling of an escape to the country. The immediate surroundings include four acres of perfectly manicured gardens maintained to the standards of the Royal Horticultural Society by one master gardener -- a highpoint of the property. Though it's a bit of a hike into town (about 20 minutes), it's a very scenic walk, taking you past the famous Royal Crescent and through beautiful Royal Victoria Park, which houses the area’s Botanical Gardens.

Rooms

Tasteful and distinctly decorated with modern amenities

The rooms of The Bath Priory are conservatively decorated, which fits in well with the overall estate feel. There are 27 rooms and six suites, all of which have their own unique flair -- some are red, some are blue, others very floral. All have a classic British feel with cushy bedding and accents like dark wood antique bureaus and vanity table mirrors. Amenities like in-room Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and climate control allow guests their modern comforts as well. The bathrooms are clean and spacious with handheld showerheads in the showers and bathtubs; heated towel racks and fluffy robes are an extra touch. Though all rooms are pleasant, for the quietest and best experience request a space overlooking the splendid gardens.

Features

Michelin-rated dining, a superb spa, and two pools

The Bath Priory Restaurant is helmed by Executive Chef Michael Nizzero and serves fine European cuisine with a decided focus on fresh local ingredients; in fact, the biggest supplier is the hotel's own kitchen garden. The restaurant, awarded with 3 AA rosettes, is open for lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner daily, but be aware that it's small, so you might wish to make reservations before your arrival since it books up quickly. There’s a more casual restaurant on-site called The Pantry, and room service is available. The rather kitschy Bath Priory Bar -- which has red leather couches with matching red-and-white striped drapes framing big windows, and more art on the walls -- serves up interesting cocktails, also offering a varied wine list thanks to the large cellar on property.

There’s not much in the way of business facilities here, but there is one meeting room available. Business travelers will more likely meet up in the other common areas. The spa is top-notch with a variety of treatments available as well as a steam room, a sauna, and an indoor pool available to children only at certain hours. There is a seasonal outdoor pool available to all when it's open. On-site parking is free.
