Bottom Line

Located in the heart of Hopkins Village, Coconut Row Guest House is a rustic waterfront inn with few features but plenty of tropical charm. A dozen restaurants, shops, and services are within an eight-minute walk of the property. Each of the five homey, beachfront rooms features free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges (or optional kitchenettes/kitchens), and private balconies just steps from the Caribbean Sea. However, the lack of any real social scene and the fee for daytime air-conditioning are particularly noteworthy. As an alternative, Beaches And Dreams offers three-pearl amenities including a pool and open-air, beachfront restaurant, though it will be slightly pricier

Coconut Row

Scene

Homey beachfront inn that oozes Belizean charm

The inn’s design is classic Caribbean, with thatched roofs, bold orange and lime green stucco exteriors, and louvered windows all coming together to create an immediately colorful and homey look. It blends seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood -- funky, eclectic, and entirely Belizean. The property’s social “scene” begins and ends with the beach, although it is one of the area’s most pristine stretches of sand. While several rooms offer multiple beds, making them ideal for families, the lack of kid-centric amenities means that this is a distinctly adult-oriented property. The inn caters to adults seeking simple, clean, waterfront rooms on an equally clean strip of beach to relax day and night.

Location

On the beach, just blocks from the center of Hopkins Village

Coconut Row Guest House is centrally located two blocks from Hopkins’ main intersection. At least a dozen local shops, traditional Garifuna restaurants, and services that include a bank and two markets are within an eight-minute walk. Guests looking to explore Belize’s stunning rainforest-laden interior can reach Mayflower Bocawina National Park in less than 30 minutes by car. The nature reserve offers a full-service adventure center with guided tours for kayaking, hiking, and exploring Mayan ruins.

The nearest airport -- Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) -- is three hours away in Belize City, although Dangriga’s pint-size airport is roughly a half-hour away. However, the latter offers far fewer flight options. As there's a lot to see near the hotel, it's worth investing in a rental car, and brand-name rental car counters are available at BZE airport with rates comparable to most Caribbean tourist destinations.

Rooms

Tasteful, tropical rooms with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and beachfront porches or verandas

Like the hotel’s common areas, every room offers decor that’s simple with tropical touches, though no two units look alike. Expect to see details that include woven bamboo window treatments, clay tile flooring, and bamboo furniture all coming together to create a look and feel that’s homelike and tasteful -- and entirely unpretentious.

Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout, and we found the service to be fast and reliable during our stay. There are no televisions anywhere on the property and there are fees for use of air-conditioning during the daytime. Bathroom decor varies widely from bold and beach-inspired to refined modern cottage. All feature walk-in shower stalls and pump-style bath products.

While every room is uniquely designed and appointed, there are two overall categories -- rooms and apartments. Entry-level rooms are elevated standalone cabins with one-room floor plans similar to a typical hotel room, plus a private veranda that overlooks the beach. All include mini-fridges and coffeemakers. The inn’s upgraded Apartments have larger floor plans with multiple bedrooms -- an ideal setup for families or couples traveling together. The hotel’s sole Sunrise Suite includes a kitchenette, plus a private rooftop deck. The flagship Casa Blanca Apartment upgrades to a full kitchen and a wide veranda that opens directly to the beach.

Features

A beautiful, well-maintained beach with calm waters, but little else

Aside from the beach, there's not much to see and do here. However, it’s one of the most beautiful, well-maintained, and well-reviewed beaches in the Hopkins are. Like the rest of the property, it's stripped down to only the essentials -- soft, clean sand and ample seating (including hammocks, wooden lounge chairs, and Adirondack chairs). There are no additional facilities or water sports of any kind. While the condition of the water depends to some degree on the weather and time of year, it’s typically calm, safe, and swimmable. Free self-parking is available in an off-street lot adjacent to the property, and the staff can help arrange various excursions and tours.
