Bottom Line

With rustic touches throughout several of its common areas, this three-pearl Hilton Garden Inn is cozier than the average business hotel and fits in well with its historic surroundings in the popular Old Mill District of Bend. The 96 rooms and suites are on the generic side, but are spacious and well-appointed with Keurig coffeemakers, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Several rooms offer great views of Mt. Bachelor and the area’s iconic smokestacks. Breakfast isn’t included, but a full restaurant, plus 24-hour amenities like the convenience store, gym, indoor pool, hot tub, and business center compose a decent range of features. The Pine Ridge Inn is even cozier, and closer to the base of Mount Bachelor, but it doesn't have a pool or fitness center and is further from downtown Bend.

Hilton Garden Inn Bend

Scene

Contemporary country common areas make this business-friendly property reminiscent of a mountain lodge

With stone siding and slanting brick roofs, this property has a contemporary country look on the outside that’s built upon further inside, especially in the high-ceilinged lobby. Wooden pillars, richly patterned rugs, several seating areas featuring comfy couches with mix-and-match upholstery, and a large gas fireplace give the area a warm, inviting look that evokes the cozy interiors of a mountain lodge. Other common spaces, like the restaurant and meeting rooms, are simpler, but also incorporate some blend of woodsy and modern elements. There is only one elevator though, which feels insufficient for the hotel’s size and number of guests. Overall, the cozy aesthetic is a step up and gives the property a broader appeal. Guests can be seen working on laptops or holding meetings with colleagues in the lobby. Families and couples on holiday or winter ski trips are also popular guests.

Location

Just above historic Old Mill District; close to downtown Bend and 20 minutes to Mt. Bachelor

The hotel is conveniently situated just above the Old Mill District; thanks to a walkway from the parking lot, it’s just three minutes on foot to the historic area’s many quaint shops and bustling restaurants. The district’s Les Schwab Amphitheater across the Deschutes River is just eight-minute walk away. Plenty of nature sites and family-friendly attractions are within a short drive, making the hotel’s location popular with tourists. The historic downtown area is an eight-minute drive away, and the High Desert Museum and Pilot Butte are both 12 minutes away by car. Slightly further out, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a 25-minute drive away. Mount Bachelor, providing skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer, is 20 minutes away by car. Redmond Municipal Airport is an 18-minute drive.

Rooms

Generic but well-maintained, with Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves

Clean and comfortable, rooms are available with single king beds or two queen beds, armchairs, and ottomans. Decor is updated, but generic, with simple carpeting, furniture, and drapes in mostly neutral brown tones. Standard room amenities include air-conditioning, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, desks with built-in outlets, blackout curtains, and free Wi-Fi -- but no safes. All rooms have microwaves, mini-fridges, ironing boards, and Keurig coffeemakers along with tea-making facilities. Deluxe Rooms have two TVs, and some also have balconies with seating, charming fireplaces, or king sofa beds. Suites can come in the bi-level or one-bedroom variety, and can feature hot tubs or small kitchens. Accessible rooms are also available.

Bathrooms in Standard Rooms are clean with granite countertops and small vanities. Several rooms come with shower/tub combos with fixed showerheads. Hairdryers and Neutrogena toiletries are provided.

Rooms on the river side of the hotel are preferable, as they come with lovely views of Mount Bachelor or Bend’s three signature smokestacks. Some guests complain of thin walls, which allow noises of neighboring guests, the elevator, and outdoor traffic to creep in.

Features

Breakfast decent but not included; 24-hour gym, pool, business center; free parking and Wi-Fi

The hotel’s simple and casual Garden Grille & Bar serves breakfast, which isn’t included with rates, but is a decent offering of hot, made-to-order food plus a continental buffet. The restaurant also offers dinner, which features burgers, grilled meats, and salads, plus a kids’ menu. Evening room service is available. For on-the-go snacks, the convenience store-style Pavilion Pantry is open 24-hours a day, offering chips, cookies, granola bars, freezer meals, and beverages. The hotel also provides free afternoon cookies in the lobby.

The indoor pool, hot tub, and gym are all open 24/7, which is convenient, but the areas are rather no-frills, without much atmosphere. A small, 24-hour, two-computer business center is available, as well as a coin-operated laundry facility.

Three boardrooms and event halls are available for events. There are also accessible features throughout the hotel, including entrance ramps and exercise areas, closed-captioning on TVs, and parking spots. Parking is plentiful and free for all guests, as is Wi-Fi throughout the property.
