Bottom Line

Les Dunes Comodoro Hotel is an upper-middle-range property with an excellent central location overlooking Benidorn's Playa Levante and close to nightlife. The 92 contemporary rooms and suites here all have sea views, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges, and many have furnished balconies and wet bars. A quality list of features includes a decent-sized pool that's housed in an atrium during winter -- though the surrounding deck is showing lots of wear -- a modern fitness center, sauna, and two restaurants, one with outdoor seating. It's worth comparing rates with the Villa Del Mar Hotel, which has equally impressive vistas, plus a spa and kids' pool.

Les Dunes Comodoro Hotel

Scene

Contemporary beachfront hotel popular with couples and families

Set right on Levante Beach, Les Dunes Comodoro Hotel caters primarily to leisure travelers, attracting both couples and families. The hotel looks large from the outside as it occupies a tall tower, but it's actually relatively small for the area. Inside, the lobby is traditionally decorated with marble tiling featuring a compass point, a wooden bench, and nautical accents. When guests aren't out at the beach or nearby bars, the pool deck is one of the more popular leisure spots, though it's also showing the most age due to its weathered Astroturf. Fortunately, the dining outlets and rooms are filled with modern neutral-tone furnishings in much better condition.

Location

Beachfront location on Benidorm's Playa de Levante

Les Dunes Comodoro Hotel is located in the popular resort town of Benidorm. The beachfront hotel is located on the eastern end of Avenida Madrid, the coastal road that runs along Playa de Levante on the Mediterranean Sea. It's a 20-minute drive to Casa Museo de Benidorm, while Platja de Ponent is a 15-minute drive (half-hour walk) away. The Balcon del Mediterraneo -- with its lovely sea views -- and the adjacent Plaza Santa Ana are a 20-minute drive away. Farther afield, La Cruz de Benidorm (or Benidorm Cross) is about 15 minutes away by car, plus a short walk up a hill. Factor in about 50 minutes by car to the Alicante Airport or railway station; there's also a bus between the city and the airport that runs about once an hour during the day. Underground parking is available for a reportedly hefty fee.

Rooms

Simple, contemporary rooms with modern amenities and sea views; many from furnished balconies

Les Dunes Comodoro offers three types of contemporary rooms: entry-level Skipper's Rooms, Captain's Junior Suites ,and Comodoro's Junior Suites. Rooms and suites follow a similar neutral-tone decor scheme of light-wood floors, white or cream-colored furniture, and muted shades of gray and beige in the curtains, bed throws, and seating. Junior Suites have separate living areas and add microwaves. All units come with wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with cable (but limited English channels), mini-fridges, and sea views -- some from furnished balconies. Bathrooms have modern vessel sinks, glass walk-in showers, and bidets, as well as hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and basic toiletries.

Features

Outdoor pool covered in winter months and two restaurants

Amenities at Les Dunes are solid for a hotel of its category, starting with its outdoor pool that's long enough for laps. It's housed in an atrium during the winter months, and there are lots of loungers and palapas on the surrounding -- though well-worn -- deck. Also available are a modern fitness center with wood floors and plenty of cardio and weight-training equipment and a cedar sauna. There are two on-site restaurants, the main buffet eatery and La Terraza, an a la carte with indoor and outdoor seating and views of the beach. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
