The two-and-a-half pearl aletto Kudamm caters to a younger crowd of budget travelers in the heart of western Berlin. It's on a busy street right near the major Zoologischer Garten train station and, as the Kudamm moniker suggests, it's within walking distance to trendy Kurfürstendamm avenue's shopping. The rooms are clean and functional and have some of the lowest rates around. There are also a number of group bunk rooms and a separate hostel area for backpackers with a communal kitchen. On-site bars are a plus as are numerous games and social activities for travelers looking to make new friends. The Circus Hotel and Circus Hostel, across the street from each other in the city center, are well worth looking into, but unlike this hotel, they have no in-room air-conditioning.

Built in 2012, this socially-driven budget hotel is full of communal spaces designed to bring people together. Floor-to-ceiling windows brighten the lobby, filled with mid-century modernist furnishings like Barcelona chairs and arc floor lamps. Large lounge areas continue the aesthetic with hardwood floors and seemingly unending minimalist seating with lime green accents. The rooftop bar is downright stylish. It's decorated with wooden benches, bright red umbrellas, and high bar stools. Views of Berlin are almost uninterrupted from up there.

The Group Rooms are similarly outfitted, but filled with stacks of twin bunk beds, which larger Family Rooms also have. All units (save the shared hostel rooms) have clean private bathrooms with walk-in showers that have handheld showerheads but limited counter space for personal belongings. The separate hostel "backpacker" area has shared bunk rooms and bathroom facilities.
