Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Ibis Hotel Airport Tegel is a reasonably good deal for those who don’t mind staying in suburban Reinickendorf well away (over a half-hour by U-bahn) from central Berlin attractions. Despite its name, at a more than 10-minute drive it’s not that close to Tegel Airport, but the U-bahn and S-bahn stations are within walking distance. Decor is modern and has a hint of minimalist-chic style, with Midcentury-Modern accents. There's a well-reviewed hot breakfast buffet for an extra charge, and a 24-hour bar for drinks and snacks. The 116 guest rooms feature simple furniture and blackboards above beds with chalk sketches. All come with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, though units lack air-conditioning. Travelers looking for a stay closer to the airport can check rates at Days Inn Berlin West -- but it doesn’t have a bar.

Ibis Hotel Airport Tegel

Scene

Stylish and affordable chain hotel

The Ibis Hotel is situated on pretty grounds with lots of trees, and housed in a distinctively pink five-floor building. The public areas give off the look of a nondescript chain hotel, but there are some pleasant characteristics, particularly the the light-wood flooring, rose-pink and blue colors in the furniture upholstery, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that let in generous natural light. Guests gather in the breakfast room and the 24-hour bar, the latter of which features a fireplace and a warm-weather outdoor terrace. The hotel draws a fair amount of leisure travelers (especially on weekends) due to rates that are more affordable than central Berlin hotels, but its chief clientele is business travelers who benefit from the hotel’s meeting rooms and location close to the airport.

Location

Slightly inconvenient suburban location, a little more than a 10-minute drive from Tegel Airport

The Ibis Hotel is in the suburban Reinickendorf borough of Berlin, on a cobblestone street in a quiet residential area with several old and traditional houses. The Ibis Hotel Airport Tegel name is misleading, as the hotel is not that close to Berlin Tegel Airport; it’s a little more than a 10-minute drive (longer in heavy traffic) or 30 minutes bus away. Restaurants, a bank, a pharmacy, and a few shops are within a short walk. The hotel features ready access to public transportation: Kolpingplatz (Berlin) bus stop is less than a minute on foot; the Residenzstrasse U-bahn (U8 line) underground station is a little more than a five-minute walk; and the S Alt-Reinickendorf (Berlin) S-bahn station is 10 minutes on foot. The vast Volkspark Schönholzer Heide park is a five-minute drive or 25 minutes by S-bahn from the hotel.

There are few tourist attractions in the immediate area, so many guests head to the Mitte in central Berlin to see the sights, and the hotel is 35 minutes by S-bahn from this area. Mitte attractions include: the Checkpoint Charlie Berlin Wall crossing, the Reichstag building, Potsdamer Platz square, the 18th-century Neoclassical Brandenburg Gate, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Rooms

Simple, contemporary look, feature flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi but lack AC and coffeemakers

The 116 guest rooms at the Ibis feature a simple chic look. The light-wood paneling, all-white bedding, and light blue and gray walls in each room get a visual pop from the red desk chair. Many rooms feature a piece of modern wall art that looks like a chalkboard drawing by Picasso. The big drawback to the rooms is their lack of air-conditioning. The hotel will provide fans upon request, but the heat in the rooms can cause guests to open windows, and this sometimes lets in traffic noise from the cobblestone street outside. In addition, a few guests have complained about thin walls making sounds from neighboring rooms audible.

All rooms come with 32-inch flat-screen TVs with over 50 German, English, and French channels. Rooms also feature desks and free Wi-Fi, but they lack mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and safes (though the front desk has safe deposit boxes). Bathrooms are well lit and feature big mirrors, but the counter space around the sink is a bit limited. All have hairdryers, soap, and showers (no bathtubs). Views are of the surrounding street and hotel grounds.

Features

Hot breakfast buffet for a fee and 24-hour bar with fireplace and terrace

The Ibis offers a limited lineup of property features, mostly aimed at guests who just need a place to sleep and eat. The breakfast buffet (for a fee) gets decent reviews for its reasonable price and quality of its spread, featuring waffles, eggs, bacon, and an ample range of cold items. The hotel bar is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and features a fireplace and outdoor terrace. It serves hot and cold snacks and a wide array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. There is no full-service restaurant or fitness center. Also on-site at the Ibis are a 24-hour front desk, several meeting rooms, and lobby business corner. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Outdoor and underground parking (with large-vehicle parking) are available for a fee, but it’s a bit of a tight squeeze to fit some larger cars into the underground garage.
