Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Kings Hotel is an unassuming guest house with an interior that’s eclectic, to say the least, but guests are primarily here for its location on Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach, close to the amusement park. Guests rave about the free breakfast, while in the evening, the breakfast room turns into a vegan restaurant serving mostly Italian fare. The 12 rooms were updated with bold, contemporary decor since new owners took over in 2016, and they have kettles, free toiletries, flat-screen TVs, and hairdryers. Bathrooms, however, are tiny. Guests looking to stay closer to the city center might want to check out the Melville Hotel, a short stroll from Blackpool Tower.

Kings Hotel

Scene

Quirky mix of decor at this small, family-run guest house

The Kings Hotel is a family-run property that was taken over in 2014, and had the rooms refreshed since then. The hotel is unlikely to win any awards for its interior design, decorated with jazzily patterned carpets, tourist brochures, and lots of garland during Christmas. Behind one of the large bay windows in this double-fronted house is a bar, with banquettes upholstered in worn fabric that clashes with the carpet, and plenty of posters with syrupy motivational quotes. At the back is a small wooden bar with bright-red leather barstools, and sweets for sale. The breakfast room and restaurant is a similar space on the other side of the house, with brown marble tabletops and leatherette dining chairs. That said, the property's crowning features is its outstanding location on Blackpool's Pleasure Beach.

Location

Ideally set along Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach, plus 10-minute tram ride from the city center

The Kings Hotel has an ideal location along Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach, a stone’s throw from a theme park home to a number of roller coasters, an ice rink, water park, and casino. South Pier, with another amusement park, is a 10-minute walk away. Just opposite the hotel is a tram stop that runs along the coast, and takes 10 minutes to reach the Central Pier, and the center of Blackpool. The hotel is a three-minute walk away from Blackpool Pleasure Beach station. Expect transfers to Blackpool Airport to take 15 minutes by tram, or five minutes by car, while Manchester Airport is around an hour’s drive.

Rooms

Basic but contemporary rooms with freebies like candy

The 12 rooms in the Kings Hotel are basic but well-decorated with contemporary decor, thanks to being updated after the change of ownership in 2014. They have a neutral-tone design with one accent color -- vibrant red, purple, or blue -- as well as modern artwork and often cheesy quotes on bedside lamps or wall decor. They come with a slew of extra goodies, including free toiletries, slippers, and little bags of jelly beans, which guests rather appreciate. Some of the rooms look out over the beach and the Irish Sea, while others have uninspiring views of a brick wall. Rooms range from small Singles to larger Family Rooms with bunk beds for kids. All have flat-screen TVs, kettles alongside tea and coffee, wardrobes with fans, and hairdryers. Some add bathrobes. Bathrooms are often tiny, and equipped with shower cubicles that have seen better days.

Features

Free breakfast and a restaurant serving vegan Italian fare

The Kings Hotel has little in the way of amenities, but it serves a free breakfast that guests tend to talk very highly of. It includes continental and cooked options, including Full English fare and lots of cereal choices. In the evening, the hotel’s breakfast room doubles as an Italian restaurant with Vegan dishes. The hotel’s bar serves drinks and light snacks, and there is an outdoor seating area out front, facing the Irish Sea (though views are obstructed). The hotel offers free parking and Wi-Fi throughout.
