Bottom Line

Lovill House Inn is arguably the best bed-and-breakfast in Boone, North Carolina. Built by a Civil War veteran in 1875, the historic inn sits on 11 wooded acres less than a mile from Appalachian State University. There are six homey rooms with private bathrooms, and a separate cottage is also available to rent. An extensive, free breakfast is served daily, with options that change regularly, but some guests find it a bit regimented, since it’s served buffet style with an 8:30 a.m. start time. The bed-and-breakfast is aimed at couples, so families may want to check out Courtyard by Marriott which offers a heated indoor pool and hot tub, a restaurant, and a fitness center.

Lovill House Inn

Scene

Homey bed-and-breakfast with historic past and lovely grounds

Lovill House Inn was built in 1875 by Captain E.F. Lovill, a Civil War veteran and State Senator. Appalachian State University, located just down the road, was also chartered in the building. The main building is a two-story house with white siding and rocking chairs lined up on the wrap-around porch. The inn's extensive grounds are filled with flowers, trees, and a small creek. Inside, the inn feels like a country home: There’s a living room area with wooden floors and a brick fireplace, and breakfast is served in a wallpapered room with two wooden tables and a big bay window. Knick-knacks, framed pictures, and carpeted stairs add to the homey vibe. The husband-and-wife innkeepers take care of guests themselves, and the inn is aimed at couples -- children under 12 are not allowed.

Rooms

Spacious, homey rooms with private bathrooms, some with fireplaces

The six rooms at the Lovill House Inn vary is decor and inclusions, but all are spacious, comfortable, and homey. Quaint decor varies; one room has mint green walls and matching bedding while another has light blue walls and floral bedding. Touches such as framed pictures, unique lamps, thoughtful knickknacks (we liked the globe bookends), and antiques add character; furniture is usually of sturdy wood and some is a bit dated, contributing to a slightly hodgepodge but throughly home-like feel. Some rooms have fireplaces, and all have flat-screen TVs with cable and DVD/VHS players, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi, but no coffee facilities. Room walls have been double built and insulated to prevent noise from outside. Bathrooms come with bathrobes and toiletry kits and have shower/tub combinations. A small cottage with a wooden porch, coffee machine, and parking lot is also available.
