Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa

Boracay, Malay, Panay Island

The focus is on tranquility and luxury at Shangri-La Boracay Resort & Spa, set on a wide expanse of lush tropical grounds perched above two beaches in northern Boracay. The hotel has 219 rooms, suites, and villas. All are stylish and elegant, with hardwood floors, seating areas, terraces with double daybeds, and large, luxe bathrooms with marble floors, separate soaking tubs, and rainfall showers. Suites have ocean views and hot tubs on the decks, plus come with butler service, as do the villas. (Villas, and particularly Tree House Villas, are in a league of their own.) Pool and beachside bars serve drinks and light snacks, and four restaurants offer varied cuisines -- one has an international buffet and the others serve Mediterranean, seafood, and Italian specialties. Solana Lounge is perched on a clifftop overlooking the beach, and has private outdoor areas with couches, daybeds, pillows, and ocean views. With an excellent spa, three striking pools, and access to two lovely beaches, there's little guests can’t do on-site. But those seeking to see the sights or experience the island’s famous nightlife can easily access Station 2 via the hotel’s free shuttle.

Discovery Shores

Boracay, Malay, Panay Island

This is one of the most luxurious resorts in the area. Located on the northern tip of gorgeous White Beach, the Discovery Shores Boracay has 87 spacious, luxurious rooms with large windows, contemporary decor, furnished balconies and patios, and open bathrooms. A luxe spa with couples' treatments, a pleasant pool with a swim-up bar, and beach and pool butlers add to the resort's appeal -- and its price tag -- but freebies such as roundtrip airport transfers, shuttle service to other parts of the island, Wi-Fi, and breakfast add value. Additionally, service is consistently outstanding, with great attention to detail and lots of thoughtful extras, including welcome foot baths, turndown service with personalized treats, and face mist service by the pool. Both casual and fine-dining restaurants are on-site, and a tapas menu can be enjoyed at the beach bar at sunset.

The 39-room Villa Caemilla is a beachfront hotel with a relaxed vibe in quiet Station 3. All rooms were fully renovated in 2014 and feature large flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electric kettles. Bathrooms are spacious and upscale, with slate floors and large glass-enclosed walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. The hotel’s highlight is its beachfront area, where private lounge chairs, bottled water, and towels are available free of charge. Additionally, a beach attendant takes food and drinks orders, and offers cold towels throughout the day. Also directly on the sand is the hotel’s casual, shaded restaurant, serving salads, sandwiches, pasta, and snacks. Villa Caemilla offers free shuttle service to and from the Caticlan airport dock, as well as discounted rates at a lovely spa located down the street.

Fridays Boracay

Boracay, Malay, Panay Island

Named after the native whom Robinson Crusoe befriends (despite that tale being set in the Caribbean), Friday's sits on a wide stretch of gorgeous shoreline. Unfortunately, as one of the oldest resorts in the area, that beach might just be the best highlight -- at least when it comes to aesthetics. Friday's maintains a relaxed, beachy theme, with the 50 rooms housed in traditional stilted bamboo Nipa huts spread across palm-lined grounds. Each air-conditioned room has a verandas, but the rustic wood furnishings tend to be worn and old. Wi-Fi is free in all rooms, and mini-fridges come standard. Bathrooms have walk-in rainfall showers, but many are in need of some renovation. Friday's has a beachfront restaurant and bar and a small outdoor pool, but few other facilities and only a modest spa.
