Bottom Line

This budget chalet-style hotel in the countryside about four miles outside of downtown Gramado offers a quiet escape in the woods, but it's definitely on the rustic side. The 18 separate cottages are built for double occupancy, and feel cozy and romantic with minimalist wood decor and modern features like flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and mini-fridges. However, the chalets could use a bit of refurbishment and better housekeeping, and there is a charge for firewood for the fireplaces. A free breakfast buffet is included, but there's no restaurant, so other meals have to be found elsewhere. There are minimal extras here -- no gym or business center -- but those seeking a private escape on the outskirts of town could find this fits the bill.

Pousada Chales da Montanha

Scene

A rural, private, and low-key property in a natural setting

For guests who like trees, hidden pathways, rustic lodging, and quiet, this could be a good choice. Made up of 18 separate chalets, this inn spreads out over almost eight acres of wooded property. The place is exceptionally quiet owing to the fact there is pretty much nothing surrounding the inn except nature. Things are a little on the "rough" side here; there's a tiny reception area with just a wooden desk and a wicker couch, and wood-framed windows offering views of the forest grounds. The breakfast room feels like a log cabin with its wooden walls and ceilings, stone floors, and large windows overlooking the natural surroundings to heighten the earthy ambiance. Otherwise, common areas are few. The vibe is generally relaxed, and guests are mostly couples looking for an escape outside of the city areas. Low-maintenance, do-it-yourself travelers are best suited to this hotel -- especially since the staff isn't very helpful in resolving issues that may arise. But the whole log cabin feel can actually be quite romantic, if guests are simply anticipating a rustic place to crash and not posh accommodations.

Location

Situated in the forest outside of downtown Gramado

Located in the woods in the Mato Queimado area about four miles from the center of Gramado, this inn is a bit off the beaten path -- even though the roads there are all paved -- and can be difficult to find at night. Immediately surrounding the hotel there is not much except nature, so guests will need vehicles if wishing to visit area attractions such as the Gramado Golf Club, Korvatunturi Theater, Centro Municipal de CulturaI, and Palace of Festivals -- all within about a 10 to 15 minutes' drive of the property.  The Caxias do Sul Airport is about an hour and a half by car.

Rooms

Separate chalets with minimal wooden decor and mini-fridges

There are 10 Deluxe and eight Superior Deluxe chalets, which vary slightly in size and amenities. Some chalets have larger living space and/or microwaves, fireplaces (with fees for wood), and balconies with lake views. All rooms have very minimal decor with wood walls, floors, ceilings, and furnishings, giving the spaces a no-frills but simultaneously rustic and cozy feel. A sheepskin throw is about the only touch of luxury. Modern amenities in all chalets include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi (though the connection can be inconsistent). The bathrooms are merely functional and have walk-in showers and minimal toiletries -- just a bar of average soap. Cups are also hard to come by, some of the towels have rips in them or are fraying, and there are mineral deposits on the showerheads. Overall, the upkeep could be improved and the cleanliness could go up a notch. However, these rooms do provide more creature comforts when compared to camping in a tent.

Features

Free breakfast in a log-cabin setting and barbecue grills

This hotel doesn't offer much in the way of perks -- there is no pool, spa, gym, or business center. There is also no on-site restaurant, so guests must leave the premises for lunch or dinner to find food. But there is a daily buffet breakfast that's included with the room rate. While there's a good variety of choices including fruits and pastries, the dishes are not clearly labeled, so those with food sensitivities/allergies, especially those who don't speak Portuguese, should take note. Barbecue grills and a picnic area are also available for guests to use, and there are some garden areas as well for enjoying the natural surroundings -- the highlight of this property.
