Bottom Line

If its name doesn’t conjure up a vision of a dumpy, urban, budget motel, the actual sight of Inter City will probably do the trick. Only travelers who really need to be in Burnaby (and who are somewhat desperate for a place to stay), should consider this place. Grounds feel pretty desolate, but there are some attempts at brightening the place up with flower beds and hanging plants near the front office. Guest rooms, however, are very worn and dirty, with torn fabric and odors. Coughing up a few extra dollars to stay elsewhere is worth the money. We'd say you get what you pay for, but at Inter City Motel, you don't get much, and rates can be surprisingly high.

Oyster Hotel Review

Inter City Motel

Scene

Desolate two-story motel with creepy vibe

There's a front office -- rather than a lobby -- that offers no seating other than an old patio table on the grass outside. There are some colorful flower beds and a few hanging plants, but the overall vibe is creepy and the parking lot desolate. Stairs leading to the second story are shoddy-looking and faded, and the exterior walls have chipped paint. There is no restaurant, bar, fitness center, or pool on-site.

Location

In a gritty neighborhood on busy Kingsway St., a short drive to central Burnaby

The drive to the Vancouver International airport is about a half-hour. The heart of Burnaby -- including Metropolis at Metrotown and Crystal Mall -- and Burnaby Village Museum are within about a 10 minutes' drive, or about a half-hour walking. There is nothing nice or interesting in immediate proximity to the hotel, just a chicken restaurant next door. A pub and grill about a five-minute walk down Kingsway is the best food option.

Rooms

Worn and unkempt, with tube TVs

Each of the 30 rooms are Inter City Motel are a little different but all are dirty. The rooms are spacious, and have free Wi-Fi and color tube TVs (some have telephones and a flat-screen TV). Some have a kitchenette with sink, mini-fridge, and microwave; others just have a microwave. Rooms have broken or missing microwaves, while others smell like cigarette smoke, or have torn or stained furniture. The colors are ill-matched, and some bathtubs are chipped. There are exposed wires near the electrical sockets in some rooms. Guests may have an urge to wear gloves (or a plastic body suit) before touching anything while others have reported sleeping on top of their clothes for fear of touching the sheets.

There is free Wi-Fi and parking, and that's about it. Rooms have a kitchenette with mini-fridge and microwave (if you’re lucky), but these are not clean and may smell funny.
