This 11-room boutique hotel, located within the walls of Buda Castle on the Buda side of the Danube, is one of the city's best upscale options. The vibrant, individually decorated rooms were styled by celebrated Hungarian designer Tibor Somlai. The reception desk doubles as a bar and the on-site Baltazar Hungarian Grill gets good reviews for its modern takes on Hungarian classics; the attached wine bar has an extensive list of Carpathian wines. However, the hotel offers little more in terms of amenities, and there's no gym, spa, or business facilities.
Scene
Small hotel with eclectically furnished lobby
Guests enter the boutique hotel from a cobblestoned pedestrian street. The industrial-style red-brick lobby has a black-and-red bar, lit with exposed light bulbs, that doubles as the reception desk, and there's a long stretch of red leather couches with pincushion-style backboards. The hallways and stairwells feature monotone hues with a pop of color in the form of bright-red hand railings and vintage-style advertisement posters.
Location
Situated on a quiet street in a historic Buda neighborhood
The Baltazar is located on a quiet street in Budapest's historic District One, within the northern walls of the Buda Castle. It's surrounded by historic buildings that are protected landmarks, and there are gourmet restaurants, museums, and national monuments within a five-minute walk of the hotel. The city center on the eastern Pest side of the Danube takes just under 20 minutes to reach by metro (Line 2). The airport is a half-hour drive away.
Rooms
Uniquely decorated rooms with modern amenities
Celebrated interior designer Tibor Somlai is responsible for the Baltazar's individually decorated rooms, which were inspired by Vivienne Westwood, Keith Haring, and Andy Warhol. Rooms contain a mix of modern and vintage furniture offset by bold, sometimes vivid, artwork. Rooms have modern amenities including mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, music players that connect to smartphones, and adjustable lighting systems. Hypo-allergenic bedding is available on request. Beige marble bathrooms have shower/tub combos with large rainfall showerheads and soap/shampoo/conditioner dispensers with L'Occitaine products. Wi-Fi is free in rooms and throughout the hotel.
Features
On-site gastronomic grill, plus a wine bar with an extensive wine list
In addition to the hotel’s reception desk/bar hybrid, there's a popular eatery, Baltazar Hungarian Grill, on-site. The restaurant uses high-quality ingredients in its Hungarian classics, vegetarian dishes, and meats cooked on a handmade charcoal grill. Interiors feature bold and bright decor with predominantly red accents, exposed light bulbs, and multiple mirrors, and there's a small amount of outdoor seating on a cobblestone terrace in front of the restaurant. There's also a wine bar with a large selection of wines from the Carpathian Basin.
