Bottom Line

Near the beach and the city center, the three-and-a-half pearl Tronador Hotel will do nicely for leisure and business travelers. It's within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and Casino del Mar, plus it has convenient on-site amenities such as an indoor pool, gym, breakfast buffet, and meeting rooms. Just about the only thing missing is a restaurant. The 73 rooms are a bit dated (as are some of the public spaces) and lack coffee- and tea-making facilities, but they're air-conditioned and come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. For a similar price, travelers might want to consider the Grand Hotel Santa Teresita, which has a restaurant, trendy design, and is closer to the beach.

Tronador Hotel

Scene

Contemporary hotel with some dated spaces

The Tronador has an overall pleasant decor, and the lobby provides a warm ambience. Floors are white and glossy, and there’s a mix of patterned and solid colored armchairs and couches. Large art pieces depicting daily life and black-framed photographs add an artistic element to the space. But worn armchairs bring the design quotient down a few rungs. The breakfast room features dated red chairs and tables set with yellow tablecloths, which contrasts with the bar’s contemporary design and striped booths. Given its key location and range of facilities, the hotel draws tourists and business travelers.

Location

Near the beach and city center

Tronador Hotel has the advantage of being near the beach and the city center. It’s surrounded by restaurants, bars, and boutiques for shopping. It’s also just a 10-minute walk to the beach. Casino del Mar is a 15-minute walk away and it’s seven minutes on foot to the Mar del Plata Cathedral. The Reserva de Lobos Marinos (sea lion reserve) and Laguna de los Padres are about a 30-minute drive from the hotel. It’s a 25-minute drive to Astor Piazzolla International Airport.

Rooms

Classic rooms with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and air-conditioning

The 73 rooms at Tronador Hotel are spacious, but (some) dated blue polyester bedspreads, worn wooden furniture, and old-fashioned lamps detract from the overall style. Clean gray carpet and abstract art pieces liven up the decor. All rooms include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, safes, and mini-fridges. There are no coffee- and tea-making facilities. Light-gray tiled bathrooms are contemporary and clean, and include hairdryers and toiletries. Junior Rooms feature shower/tub combos and Senior Rooms include tubs with hydromassage jets. Senior Deluxe rooms take it up a notch with separate showers and large jetted tubs. Past guests have complained about spotty housekeeping and maintenance.

Features

Indoor pool, dry sauna, and an extra charge for breakfast buffet

Though it lacks a restaurant on-site, Tronador Hotel does fairly well when it comes to leisure and business amenities. Its indoor heated pool has hydromassage jets (note that children are restricted to certain pool hours). There's also a dry sauna, Finnish bath, and a Scottish shower. The modest gym has a range of cardio- and weight-training equipment, but the equipment isn't state of the art. The breakfast buffet consists of cold cuts, cheeses, pastries, and cereals, but it cost extra. There are meeting rooms or small offices, and a business center with desktop computers and a printer, plus free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Free garage parking is a few blocks away -- note that the spaces can be a bit tight for some cars.
