Big Bear Frontier

Big Bear Frontier Cabins & Hotel comprises a collection of charming cabins by Big Bear Lake, its woodsy grounds studded with tall pines. Bright red doors pop against the olive and brown hues of the structures. As expected, the all-wood interiors are cozy and homey, and the inviting lobby is complete with a large stone fireplace adorned with a painting of a bear above the mantel. Distressed brown leather sofas provide seating by the warmth of the fire, while elements like antler details on the hanging lights and handmade wooden furniture add to the rustic feel. There's not much in the way of common spaces -- beyond the great outdoors -- but the property makes for a homey base for travelers on a budget seeking to enjoy nature, hike, ski, or otherwise partake in the outdoor activities that the area is famous for.

Located off of Big Bear Boulevard, the hotel is situated in a wooded area by Big Bear Lake. There are a couple of shops nearby as well as some casual dining options like a pizzeria, plus the Big Bear Marina is a five-minute walk from the property. The center of the village, with more shops, restaurants, bars, and attractions like a movie theater, is a five-minute drive away or about a 10- to 15-minute walk. The area draws travelers seeking to hike, fish, mountain bike, and ski, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so nearby; both Bear Mountain Ski Resort and Snow Summit Ski Resort are within a 10-minute drive. San Bernardino is about an hour's drive away while LA can be reached in around two hours. LAX Airport is about two to two-and-a-half hours away.

The property offers both guest rooms and cabins. Decor is basic, but the spaces are homey and pleasant. Wood-paneled walls add a rustic vibe, as do the fireplaces (firewood can be purchased in the lobby), while colorful bed runners add a pop of vibrancy.

Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, VCR/DVD players, microwaves, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, electronic safes, and free Wi-Fi. There's no air-conditioning, but fans are provided. Cabins have full kitchens with four-burner stoves and other appliances, while larger units add dishwashers and full-size fridges as well as living rooms and dining areas. Some of the cabins also have extras like decks and private beachfront barbecues. Bathrooms are small and a bit dated, and are equipped with either shower/tub combos or walk-in showers; some of the units also have whirlpool tubs.

Note that there have been some complaints about cleanliness and maintenance issues; some past guests have remarked that carpets were worn, towels were dirty, and appliances were old.

Amenities are a bit limited at this simple, budget-oriented property, but the hotel does offer some on-site conveniences. An outdoor pool and a hot tub are available for guest use, with a handful of loungers as well as an umbrella-shaded table and chairs providing seating on the surrounding sundeck. There's also a basketball hoop and a ping-pong table outside for guest entertainment. Guests also have access to barbecue facilities, plus some cabins have their own private barbecue grills. 

Free coffee, hot chocolate, and tea are available in the lobby, where guests will also find a collection of books available for borrow. A small adjacent room is home to some vending machines and arcade games, as well as a collection of videotapes and DVDs that are available to rent. A business center with a computer and printer is available for guest use. Pets are allowed for a fee.
