Cons

  • Can be tricky to navigate to
  • Little soundproofing in rooms
  • No in-room refreshments
  • Closes over winter
  • No in-room Wi-Fi (This is unclear -- a TA review says there is no Wi-Fi anywhere, while other sites say there is free Wi-Fi in the common areas. Nothing is said about Wi-Fi on the hotel website from what I can tell.)

Bottom Line

Le Flaubert is a charming, attractive, and quintessentially French seafront guesthouse overlooking a wide sandy beach in Trouville-sur-Mer. Its 32 rooms are bright and individually styled, some with balconies overlooking the sea. The mid-range property has no dining area or in-room refreshments, though does have a small bar serving cocktails and light snacks. Breakfast can be ordered up to the room (for a fee). For such an impeccably finished hotel in such a prime setting, rates are very reasonable indeed -- just get there early if arriving by car as parking is very limited.

(Trip Advisor says 32 rooms)

Le Flaubert

Scene

Charming and traditionally Normandy seaside guesthouse with fresh and homey ambience

With its almost fairytale-like, semi-timbered Normandy architecture, it's hard not to be enamored of this quintessentially French seaside hotel on first sight. Inside, the lobby is bright with a fresh, modern palette of crisp white and pale blue, and a homey blend of contemporary and traditional furnishings. A selection of vintage cinema and tourism posters are dotted throughout, together with random curios and antique knick-knacks, which helps create the welcoming feel of a family-run guesthouse. A flight of wooden stairs and a single elevator lead to the property's five floors, each decorated in the same tastefully restrained styling and adorned with choice ornaments. The small Bar Le Bovary feels like an eclectic bohemian living room, with woven rugs, striped chairs, and paisley-patterned throw pillows in shades of red and clay set against antique wood furnishings.

Location

Set right on seafront boardwalk overlooking the wide sandy beach

Le Flaubert is situated right on the seafront overlooking the pretty golden sand beach of Trouville-sur-Mer in northern France. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the immediate surrounds and along the beachfront boardwalk, while the town center with its market and shops is a few minutes' walk southeast. Deauville's casinos and luxury hotels are just eight minutes away by car, and the Trouville-Deauville train station and yacht marina can be reached in about five minutes. D-Day landing beaches can be found within about 40 minutes' to one-hour-and-20 minutes' drive down the coast, and the historical city of Caen is about 45 to 55 minutes away.
