This 10-room value hotel is a family-owned operation that relocated to a quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of downtown Cancun at the end of 2015. It is a budget boutique destination, with stained-glass windows, plants, and Mexican antiques throughout. In some ways the new outpost is inferior to the old one; there are shared bathrooms for half of the rooms and the location is a 10-minute drive to the heart of downtown, or a 30-minute drive from Hotel Zone beaches. Those looking for more central rooms may consider the Hotel Xbalamque.
Scene
A simple budget hotel in a quiet residential area across the street from Home Depot
Everything about the Hotel Boutique Casa Mallorca is small, from the size of the rooms, to the reception area, to the narrow hallways, to the tiny garden area just outside of the restaurant. Some might call it intimate, including the family who owns it; they hope guests can appreciate the hotel for its boutique atmosphere, with stained glass windows, plants, and antiques. It's well-suited to travelers who will be gone all day exploring the Riviera Maya via tours, and will only come back to the hotel in the evening for dinner and rest.Just across Avenida Kabah from Home Depot and on the south side of the Ombligo Verde Park and cathedral, the hotel is set in a quiet, residential part of Cancun. The front of the building is an unassuming residential facade, with simple lettering stating “Casa Mallorca;" it's hard to see unless you know what to look for, as it is indistinguishable from other homes in the surrounding area. A simple barred gate opens to an exterior hallway that leads to the main floor and the spiral staircase up to the second floor. The first door off the hallway leads to a fountain and the public bathrooms, and beyond that, the restaurant and reception area. Small plants, painted benches, a bistro table and chairs, faux wrought iron windows and stairway railings, and stained glass windows add charm. Flagstone flooring in the small garden and fountain area gives way to ceramic tile floors in the restaurant, rooms, and bathrooms. The hotel completed its move in December 2015 and underwent renovations throughout 2016.
Location
In a quiet, residential part of Cancun by Ombligo Verde park
Casa
Mallorca is set on the south side of Ombligo Verde Park, an eco-reserve set
on the northern and westernmost edge of what is known as the downtown sprawl.
Kabah Avenue is just west of the hotel, and across the avenue is Home Depot, as
well as Soriana, a large supermarket. It's a quiet, safe, and (relatively) tranquil neighborhood, but guests aren’t within walking distance of much. The heart of downtown is roughly 10 to 15 minutes
away via taxi. Guests can catch the R2 Kabah bus in front of Home Depot to
head into the Hotel Zone, where the beaches are located; the trip will take roughly
30 minutes. There are dozens of local eateries
within a 10- to 15-minute walk, including the most famous taco restaurant
in the city, Tacos Rigo. Just around the corner on Kabah Avenue is Pollo Brujo
for wood-fired chicken takeaway, and La Borrega serves lamb tacos and meat
platters. Just south of Tacos Rigo on Palenque Avenue is the Italian boutique
restaurant, Assaggiare, as well as Casita Azul with its Belizean menu. There
are also two burger options: Brontos just next door to Tacos Rigo, for a
Mexican-style burger, or the Burger St. food cart north on Palenque for
American-style burgers and Louisiana-style fries.
Rooms
Simple rooms with handcrafted knicknacks, limited views, and in half, shared bathrooms
There are only 10 rooms at the hotel: five Business Rooms, and five Classic Rooms. All feature queen-size beds, handcrafted art and knickknacks on the walls and shelves, and animal-shaped towels on the beds for an extra touch of charm. The hotel also added hairdryers and desks to the rooms in 2016. Don’t expect any epic views out the windows, as you’ll be looking out onto surrounding residential buildings or cinder block construction. Wooden shelves and end tables match the clothing bureaus in some of the rooms. Rooms have both air-conditioning units and ceiling fans, and have muted green, peach, or orange walls. The Business Rooms have shared bathrooms, while the Classic Rooms have private bathrooms. All bathrooms feature showers with ceramic tile floors and walls.
Features
A breakfast restaurant and not much else
The Casa
Mallorca is mostly a self-service budget hotel, despite its boutique hotel marketing.
While the restaurant does serve breakfast,
guests are on their own for lunch and dinner. This usually isn’t an issue
as many guests are out on tours during the day, with food included,
and there are plenty of dining options in the surrounding area for dinner, as well as a supermarket just across the avenue. Breakfast is free
when booking through some third-party sources; those booking with the hotel
only pay for the room and must pay a separate fee for breakfast. Parking is
available on the street in front of the hotel, on either side of the avenue. Airport
pickup is available for guests for an additional fee.
