Scene

Classic four-story hotel on garden grounds

The classic buildings that contain the hotel and spa have large domes and luxurious building materials of marble and wood. Black wrought-iron gates and white columns add interest to the facade of each building. There's a corridor connecting both buildings to the spa so that guests can come and go in their bathrobes. Outdoor fresco paintings have been preserved on the hotel's exterior wall. The scene here is quiet and calm with an emphasis on relaxation. It mostly attracts couples, but families stay here as well and appreciate the kids' club.

Location

On secluded garden grounds in Solares

As a town, Solares is known for for its healing bathing and drinking waters which are bottled and sold throughout Spain. The neighborhood is quiet and mostly residential with local businesses and small restaurants. There's a bus station on one side of the hotel, but the gardens surrounding the property make it feel isolated. Traffic noise isn't an issue. Santander is about 11 miles from the hotel and the beautiful beaches of Somo and Loreco are just six miles away. Underground parking is free and doesn't require reservations.

Rooms

Soothing and traditional; some have views of the pretty pool

There are 113 rooms and suites inside Hotel Balneario Solares. Each is decorated in muted earth tones of blue, green, and brown and include upholstered armchairs and soft carpeting. Large windows allow natural light and views of the swimming pool or garden grounds. Flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi are nice touches as are plush bathrobes and soft slippers to wear to the spa. Bathrooms are nicely sized. Some have separate showers and whirlpool bathtubs. Long vanity counters offer plenty of space to store toiletries.

Features

A gorgeous spa, outdoor swimming pool, and restaurant

The obvious draw of Hotel Balneario Solares is the indoor spa with a huge variety of thermal pools, steam and dry heat treatments, and specialty massages, facials, and body wraps -- plus an oxygen bar. There's also a smaller pool and play area staffed by qualified personnel where parents can leave their children while they enjoy the rest of the spa. Several cardio machines and strength-training equipment are housed in a spacious room, although it's an odd arrangement for a fitness center. The on-site restaurant gets good reviews for traditional Cantabrian food. An outdoor swimming pool has sun loungers but isn't as popular a place to hang out as the spa. A small chapel for weekly mass and large meeting rooms round out the features at the hotel.
