Bottom Line

This mid-range resort is well-suited for families and groups on summer vacation, with cottages and large suites in addition to standard rooms. Even the standard rooms are spacious, but they vary from recently refurbished to decidedly dated, and the rates reflect the property's oceanfront location. The resort features a private beach, indoor and outdoor pools, and seasonal activities for kids. Guests also have access to amenities at the property's four sister resorts nearby. There is a definite focus on families here, especially during July and August, so couples looking for a romantic getaway may want to skip this resort.

Blue Water Resort

Scene

Oceanfront resort with a focus on families

From its seasonal activity program to its spacious suites, Blue Water is a great pick for families. This oceanside property offers a range of activities throughout most of the summer, including bonfires, beach parties, poolside movies, and water sports, as well as supervised games and events for children ages five to 12 at the Kids' Klub. There is also a game room with an air hockey table and small selection of video arcade games.

Guests also have access to amenities at all four of the property's sister resorts in the area, including the spa at Red Jacket Beach Resort, and the golf course at Blue Rock Golf Resort. The outdoor pool at the adjacent Riviera Beach Resort is much larger than either of the two pools at Blue Water, and has a fountain and other features that are popular with kids.

When it comes to summer on the Cape, being beachfront is what it's all about, and Blue Water has a stellar spot. However, since it is a beachfront hotel, you can expect higher prices for rooms that would be cheaper in any other location.

Travelers looking for a serene vacation or romantic getaway might do better to stay at this resort during the off-season (once all the children have gone back to school), or skip it altogether and opt for one of Red Jacket Resort’s quieter properties instead.

Location

On the beach, but still close to shopping and dining

Situated on the waterfront overlooking Nantucket Sound, Blue Water is located in South Yarmouth, which is in the middle of Cape Cod. South Yarmouth is more “strip mall” than adorable charming Main Street like you might find in other Cape towns, but the beach area is quite nice. Down on Route 28, you’ll find chain restaurants, convenience stores, and shops carrying everything from tacky souvenirs to beach toys. There are also numerous mini-golf courses in either direction on Route 6.

The Cape is a popular vacation destination, as travelers from all over New England and beyond pack the beaches and cute towns every year. Be forewarned, Route 6 can become something of a parking lot during the height of the summer, what with having only two lanes of traffic and being the only way in and out of the Cape.

  • 90-minute drive to Boston Logan International Airport
  • 3-minute drive to Route 28, which is lined with shops and restaurants
  • 30-minute drive to Chatham, MA
  • 55-minute drive to Provincetown, MA
  • 80-minute drive to Boston, MA

Rooms

The suites and cottages offer more space and features

The standard rooms at Blue Water are spacious, but vary widely in decor. Some look dated and worn, with tube TVs and patterned bedspreads reminiscent of the 1980s. Others have been updated with flat-screen TVs and more modern linens. Most are furnished with wooden tables and upholstered chairs, and feature decent-size bathrooms. Because of the beachfront location, however, expect to pay higher rates than you would otherwise for these types of rooms.

There are also suites and cottages available, which offer more space and extras such as kitchens, living rooms, and Jacuzzi tubs.

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Many guest rooms have balconies, some with ocean or garden views
  • Some guest rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens
  • Pet-friendly rooms are available (daily fees apply)
  • One, two, and four-bedroom suites offer kitchens, living rooms, and easy access to the beach
  • Upgrading to the Penthouse Suite gets you two bedrooms, two bathrooms, flat-screen TV, large living area with kitchenette, Jacuzzi tub, a small deck and partial ocean views
