Bottom Line

The highlight of this three-pearl hotel is its waterfront location overlooking Nantucket Bay -- plus it has a lovely stretch of beach right outside its doors. A car is necessary to get around the area, but it's just a 15-minute drive to Hyannis and its shops, restaurants, and ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The property offers both indoor and outdoor pools, and though there's no dining option on-site, all rooms have kitchenettes -- but note that cooking/dining-ware is not provided. Decor is pleasant and many rooms have lovely private balconies or large patios furnished with seating. Note that this seasonal hotel is closed from mid-October to mid-May. For something with more extras, check out the Riviera Beach Resort, which has a kids' club plus access to features at four of its sister properties.

Ocean Mist Beach Hotel & Suites

Scene

Beachfront hotel with a relaxed and beachy vibe

Billed as a boutique beachfront property, the Ocean Mist Beach Hotel & Suites is a solid choice for an oceanside escape. The three-story wood shingle structure befits the shorefront setting, its gray facade is atmospherically weathered by beach climes for a classic New England look. The lobby is small, but inviting, with a polished beachy look that includes gray wood flooring paired with white and gray walls that are studded with nautical photos in crisp white frames. There isn't a lot of public spaces in which to gather apart from the outdoors, either around the pool or on the lovely stretch of beach that borders the property. This is a great choice for a summertime beach getaway, and the laidback atmosphere and prime setting attract both couples and families with kids.

Location

Beachfront location in South Yarmouth, a 15-minute drive to Hyannis

The hotel's situated right on the shore in South Yarmouth overlooking Nantucket Sound, and has a small beach. A car is necessary to get around as public transportation in the area is lacking. Several dining options and shops line the nearby Main Street (four-minute drive or 25-minute walk away), where guests will also find a supermarket, banks, and a pharmacy. Those eager for some cultural endeavors might want to check out the Cape Cod Maritime Museum or the JFK Museum, both about a 15-minute drive away. A number of popular and cute towns are a short drive away, including Hyannis (15-minute drive), Harwich (23-minute drive), Eastham (33-minute drive) and Chatham (35-minute drive). Provincetown can be reached in about an hour. Ferries to Nantucket and to Martha's Vineyard depart from nearby Hyannis, and take about two hours. Barnstable Municipal Airport is a 16-minute drive away. Boston and its international airport can be reached in about 90 minutes.

Rooms

Pleasant rooms and suites have kitchenettes, plus some have lovely private balconies or large patios

Rooms are decked out in blue and brown shades and traditional furnishings, and though decor is a bit bland, the spaces are pleasant and large. Massive dark wood headboards frame beds that are topped with blue runners and accent pillows festooned with nautical designs. Small kitchenettes in separate rooms add convenience to a stay here, and come equipped with two-burner electric stoves, microwaves, sinks, coffeemakers (with a selection of coffee and teas), and mini-fridges -- but cooking- or dining-ware is not provided. Other standard amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs, DVD players, electronic safes, ironing facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have sofas, while Loft Suites (which are two-level) have separate living rooms.

Clean bathrooms are a bit small and have shower/tub combos that could use an update of fixtures. Toiletries and hairdryers are supplied. The best rooms have outdoor spaces like large private patios (other rooms have balconies) that are furnished with comfy outdoor seating as well as tables and chairs. Some rooms have partial ocean views.
