Bottom Line

This family-oriented resort offers a laid-back atmosphere and plenty of child-friendly features, such as a seasonal kids' club, a private beach, and two pools. The outdoor pool with mushroom-shaped fountain and bridge is especially popular with the kids. Decor in many of the rooms is somewhat dated, and rates reflect the property's beachfront location. Also, Riviera Beach Resort does not offer the spacious cottages that can be rented at some of its sister properties nearby. With the definite focus on families here during the high season, child-free travelers would probably prefer to stay elsewhere.

Riviera Beach Resort

Scene

Busy summer spot, with lots of activities and amenities for kids

Riviera Beach Resort is hugely popular with families, especially during the summer months. Child-friendly highlights include the beautiful private beach, seasonal Kids' Klub with supervised games and events for ages five to 12, and the meandering outdoor pool with its twisty design, mushroom-shaped fountain, and bridge.

Guests also have access to amenities at all four of the property's sister resorts in the area, including the spa at Red Jacket Beach Resort, and the golf course at Blue Rock Golf Resort. The game room at the adjacent Blue Water Resort features an air hockey table and a small selection of video arcade games.

When it comes to summer on the Cape, being beachfront is what it's all about, and Riviera Beach Resort has a stellar spot. However, since it is a beachfront hotel, you can expect higher prices for rooms that would be cheaper in any other location. Also, Riviera Beach does not have the spacious cottages that some of its nearby sister properties offer for rent.

Travelers looking for a serene vacation or romantic getaway might do better to stay at this resort during the off-season (once all the children have gone back to school), or skip it altogether and opt for one of Red Jacket Resorts quieter properties instead.

Location

Beachfront, but still near restaurants and shops

Situated on the waterfront overlooking Nantucket Sound, Riviera Beach Resort is located in South Yarmouth, which is in the middle of Cape Cod. South Yarmouth is more “strip mall” than adorable charming Main Street like you might find in other Cape towns, but the beach area is quite nice. Down on Route 28, you’ll find chain restaurants, convenience stores, and shops carrying everything from tacky souvenirs to beach toys. There are also numerous mini-golf courses in either direction on Route 6.

The Cape is a popular vacation destination, as travelers from all over New England and beyond pack the beaches and cute towns every year. Be forewarned, Route 6 can become something of a parking lot during the height of the summer, what with having only two lanes of traffic and being the only way in and out of the Cape.

  • 90-minute drive to Boston Logan International Airport
  • 3-minute drive to Route 28, which is lined with shops and restaurants
  • 30-minute drive to Chatham, MA
  • 55-minute drive to Provincetown, MA
  • 80-minute drive to Boston, MA
  • 90-minute drive to Providence, MA

Rooms

Standard hotel rooms without a lot of frills

The rooms at Riviera Beach Resort are typical as far as Cape hotel rooms go. The updated ones are missing the tacky, 1980s-style patterned bedspreads that are so popular in the Cape, but otherwise they are pretty much the same as the “non-updated” rooms. They’re spacious, with decent-size bathrooms and standard hotel furnishings such as wood tables, upholstered chairs, and tube TVs. All have balconies or private patios, and some offer ocean views. Because of the beachfront location, however, expect to pay higher rates than you would otherwise for these types of no-frills rooms.

  • Tube TVs with cable channels
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • All rooms have balconies or private patios
  • Oceanfront rooms open directly onto the beach
  • Oceanfront efficiencies open directly onto the beach and have a kitchenette with small stove and microwave
  • Pet-friendly rooms available (fees apply)
