Bottom Line

Unlike the majority of the Victorian-style bed and breakfasts in the Cape May area, or anywhere on the East Coast, the Mission Inn, built in 1912, was constructed in the classic California Spanish architectural style. Perfect for couples seeking a romantic getaway by the beach, the upscale inn includes individually designed rooms (each themed after a different California mission) and an impressive home-cooked daily breakfast.

The Mission Inn

Scene

A one-of-kind bed and breakfast in Cape May that’s perfect for a romantic getaway by the beach

In an area of town known for its bed and breakfasts, The Mission Inn stands out for its design and architecture. In the early 20th century, while others in Cape May were still building in the Victorian style, businessman Nelson Z. Graves wanted to emulate the architecture he had seen on a recent business trip to the Pacific Coast.

The current innkeepers decided to use the somewhat out-of-place architecture to their advantage, and overhauled the entire property, focusing specifically on the 21 historic Spanish missions in California, which they visited and photographed for inspiration. The inn, which has a garden patio and outdoor seating, showcases a distinct style of artwork and murals, tile and woodwork, exposed brick, and vaulted ceilings with exposed wooden beams.

An incredible amount of detail and thought went into both the living room-style public area of the hotel and the individual rooms. The highlight of the Mission Inn is its walls. Nearly every square inch has been meticulously hand-painted, reflecting the flora and architecture of the different missions.

Most rooms have large, two-person whirlpool tubs, heated tile floors in the bathrooms, electric fireplaces, showers with multiple massaging shower heads, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, iPod docking stations, and DVD players.

Guests rave about the daily breakfast spread.

As with most bed and breakfasts, The Mission Inn doesn’t have a pool, gym, or on-site restaurant that serves lunch and dinner. It is, however, located one block from the beach, and the owners, Ray and Susan, take great care in making sure guests are comfortable. Breakfast is served daily and includes fresh fruit, homemade baked items, and the innkeepers' special entree of the day. In the afternoon, light snacks are served. Street parking is available, along with free Wi-Fi and bike rentals.
