The MDC Hotel is an upscale, typical Cappadocia-style property set on a hillside overlooking Urgup town. The location offers some lovely views of the area, though is also a bit of a hike to and from town center (though free drop-offs are available). Its cave rooms are nicely finished and their spacious, marble bathrooms are a real highlight -- all have under-floor heating and whirlpool tubs. Though there is a room for massages, the lack of pool facilities is a shame, so if this is an issue check out the Kayakapi Premium Caves -- it's a little pricier but offers the full Turkish Baths experience.
Scene
Elegant and lavishly renovated Cappadocia mansion set on pretty grounds
Cobblestone streets
lead through an area of ancient cave dwellings and limestone villas once owned
by Greek aristocrats to arrive at the grand and extensive grounds of the MDC
Hotel. The hotel was once an old Ottoman mansion, and work on it started in 2007; it
reopened in 2011 under a Canadian-Turkish partnership dedicated to restoring
and retaining much of its original period elegance. As is typical for the area, the
property has a series of panoramic terraces linked up by paths and
set into the distinctively amorphous volcanic rock the region is famed for. A
series of lawns is dotted with flowers, shrubs, and terra-cotta urns, which are
lit up beautifully together with the hotel's limestone walls at night in orange
light. Inside interiors are sumptuously
furnished with gold-trimmed, antique-style furnishings, and hand-woven rugs, together
with numerous Turkish lamps which also provide a lovely glowing light in the
evening. The ambience is snug and homey, and at the same time rather lavish.
Location
Perched on hillside a 15-minute walk from Urgup town center
The hotel is
located on a peaceful hillside just on the outskirts of the historic Cappadocia
town of Urgup. The town and tourist center is a 15-minute walk away, where most
of the area's restaurants and plenty of nightlife can be found, together with numerous carved stone houses and a wonderful old hammam. The town of Göreme, with its
stunning "fairy chimney" rock formations, rock-cut churches, and open-air museum is 10 to 15 minutes away by car. The nearest airports are Kayseri and Nevsehir Kapadokya which
both take about an hour by car -- the hotel can organize transfers (for a fee).
Rooms
Superb marble bathrooms with heated flooring and whirlpool tubs
The hotel's cave
rooms are particularly nicely finished with plenty of Turkish touches such as hand-woven rugs and wall hangings; King Suites have stone fireplaces. Finished in marble with
heated flooring and hammam-style basins, the spacious bathrooms are a real
highlight with even standard rooms featuring whirlpool tubs. In-room amenities
include free Wi-Fi, minibars, and robes and slippers, while all rooms also open
onto furnishes terraces -- mostly with wonderful views. Unlike many cave rooms
in the region, all rooms here are south-facing ensuring far less
mustiness.
Features
Cooked-to-order pancakes on panoramic terrace
The hotel serves an excellent breakfast -- including cooked-to-order pancakes -- which is
included in the rate and can be enjoyed on the terrace overlooking the
picturesque surrounds. The restaurant also serves an a la carte menu of
regional dishes and provides live music every night. A spa room is available for massages as well. All the usual daytime
activities -- ballooning, trekking, jeep safari -- can be organized from the
hotel as well as Turkish belly-dancing and the famous Whirling Dervish ceremony
for the evening.
