Bottom Line

Set in a converted 16th-century monastery on the banks of the Rio Arlanzon, in the heart of Burgos, the 110-room NH Collection Palacio de Burgos is a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel that juxtaposes dramatic Gothic period features like vaulted cloisters with sleek modern furnishings. Guests rave about the hotel’s buffet breakfast (fee), while the restaurant serves an a la carte dinner. Rooms are contemporary and sleek, with pillow menus, four-poster beds, and Nespresso machines, plus some have views of Burgos’ cathedral. There's no swimming pool, but wellness features include massage rooms, a sauna, and gym. NH Collection Palacio de Burgos

Scene

Sleek, modern interiors within restored 16th-century building

Set in a Gothic 16th-century monastery complete with a spire and great wooden doors, the NH Collection Palacio de Burgos certainly makes an impression. Its interiors combine period features such as vaulted colonnades and grand arched window frames with ivory limestone floors, well-chosen antique furniture, and contemporary seating in warm neutral tones, plus splashes of cerise. The on-site restaurant, occupying what used to be the monastery’s refectory, is a warm and airy space with a brown and beige color palette. The hotel’s most dramatic space is also its largest, a large and grandiose cloister roofed by a great glass dome. The property primarily attracts Spanish couples plus some business travelers.

Location

Six minutes’ walk to Burgos Cathedral and 20 to the Castillo de Burgos

It’s hard to get more central than the Palacio de Burgos. Situated on the Rio Arlanzon and the park that runs along its banks, it’s a six-minute walk to Burgos Cathedral, in the old part of town, and a 20-minute walk to the Castillo de Burgos. There are a number of shops, bars, and restaurants in the historic center of Burgos, including a branch of the near-ubiquitous department store El Corte Ingles. Expect a 15-minute transfer to Burgos Airport.

Rooms

Bright and well-decorated rooms with Nespresso machines, pillow menus, and four-poster beds

The hotel’s 110 rooms are all decorated to a high standard, with walnut floors, ivory walls, and white linens on four-poster beds. On the downside, some past guests have complained about noise from outside. Standard Rooms make space for an armchair, a desk, and an ottoman that sits below the room’s window, while Premium Rooms have a plush couch upholstered in taupe suede that sits at the foot of the bed. Bathrooms are tiled in tan limestone, and outfitted with shower/tub combos, bidets, hairdryers, and hotel-branded toiletries.

Junior Suites are cozy spaces under the eaves on the top floor, with sloping ceilings and a full-sized couch. Suites have a bedroom with a similar setup to the Standard Room, plus a separate living room with a couch, ottoman, and Persian rug. Bathrooms in the Suites and Junior Suites have a shower cubicle and a large corner tub. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, kettle and Nespresso machine, a minibar, safe, and free Wi-Fi, as well as pillow menus.

Features

A gym and sauna, and a buffet breakfast that gets high marks

The NH Collection Palacio de Burgos has a sufficient, but not extensive, list of amenities aimed at satisfying both business travelers and vacationers. The hotel has a business center with eight meeting rooms, the largest of which -- housed in a dramatic, glass-roofed medieval cloister -- can accommodate 1000 people. Guests rave about the buffet breakfast, served in an attractive dining room, which includes local charcuterie and cheeses, breads and baked goods, fruit and yogurt, as well as hot items cooked to order. However, it's not included. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner with a menu of local and international cuisine. A sauna and well-equipped gym are on-site, though unsurprisingly, there's no pool. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel. Parking is available on-site for a hefty fee.
