Bottom Line

There are some flaws throughout this two-pearl property, a family-friendly option that's just a block from the beach. Features are standard for Costa Brava properties and include a large freeform pool with plenty of sun loungers, a restaurant, and two bars. All-inclusive rates are available, though food can get monotonous and there are restrictions. There’s a playground and activities for children, plus entertainment most evenings. The 174 rooms are on the small side and the decor is dated and worn, though some have balconies with lovely water views. For travelers who'd like something a bit more modern, it's worth considering the Hotel & Spa Beverly Park, which has slightly better rates.

Hotel Blaumar

Scene

Laid back and family friendly, with a lively pool area, though decor is dated and tired

The Hotel Blaumar doesn't do much to stand out from the competition in the Costa Brava region, where outdated budget and mid-range properties can be the norm in many towns. That being said, for travelers who manage their expectations, it can still be a pleasant enough place to spend a few days. The atmosphere here is relaxed, and the crowd includes tourists from throughout Europe and the U.K. Most flock to the pool area, filled with bright blue sun loungers and often hosting entertainment for the kids. There's also music at night for adults and kids, fostering the property's holiday vibe. The Blaumar is a few decades old, and the decor reflects that fact. The 1970s style is particularly prominent in the wood-paneled Cafe Bar, which has the feel of a basement rec room in a suburban split-level home. In fact, you're likely to spot lots of antiqued finishes and unattractive patterns throughout the property, from the common areas to rooms. Rates can be quite a bargain, though, which helps explain the property's lasting appeal.

Location

A block from the beach and a five-minute walk to shops and restaurants

The hotel is located at the southern end of Blanes, surrounded by hotels and campsites. It’s a block from the beach, which is the main draw here, and there are a handful of tourist-friendly restaurants and shops along Avinguda Vila de Madrid, a five-minute walk away. Otherwise, the official center of town is a bit too far to reach on foot -- it's a 10-minute drive or 25-minute stroll along the seaside promenade. Once in town, there are plenty more dining, drinking, and shopping opportunities. It’s a one-hour drive to Barcelona, a 40-minute drive to the city of Girona, and a 30-minute drive to the Girona-Costa Brava Airport.

Rooms

Bland and dated decor plus fees for basic amenities, but some have sea-view balconies

Rooms here are certainly colorful, though there are several caveats you should know before booking. First off, the style is undeniably dated. Expect to see laminate wood floors and an abundance of worn yellow-and-orange patterned fabrics everywhere from the bedspreads to the curtains. There are also pullout couches that have seen better days, and yellow antiqued walls that only add to the clashing hues. Double Rooms -- the largest available -- can fit up to four people (a mix of kids and adults), but they will be cramped. Bathrooms are dated as well, though the style hails from another unidentifiable decade, with beige marble walls and vanities plus sinks made of textured glass. They include screened shower/tub combos and basic toiletries. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and small balconies with plastic chairs and small tables. Some have beautiful views of the water in the distance. It's worth noting that additional fees are charged for basics like Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and safes -- so check ahead.

Features

Restaurant, two bars, large pool area, and entertainment -- though all-inclusive rates underwhelm

Like most of the area competition, this hotel has all of the standard features expected in a Costa Brava budget hotel. There's a restaurant and two bars – one in the lobby (with space overlooking the pool) and another with a pool table. Breakfast is included in all daily rates, with half board and all-inclusive options available. However, previous guests grumble about those all-inclusive rates due to monotonous food and drink offerings as well as restrictions. The hotel offers children’s entertainment throughout the day and evening entertainment for families. A large freeform pool and expansive lounging area is one of the highlights here, with sunny and shaded areas and a nearby playground. There's a spa at the sister hotel, Blaucel, but no services are available on-site. Wi-Fi has to be added to standard room packages.
