Grand Cayman Beach Suites is a four-pearl hotel located on a
pristine stretch of Seven Mile Beach. The hotel’s 53 suites are immaculate and
all feature separate living areas and kitchenettes, but the decor could use a
refresh. The sleek pool area, sophisticated restaurant and trendy lounge are
significantly more design-conscious. Its location, bang in the heart of Grand
Cayman’s main tourist area, offers easy access to restaurants, shops, and the
island’s prettiest beach. But it’s worth comparing rates and amenities with The
Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa down the road.
Small, low-key resort with a great location and a nice range of amenities
Formerly the all-suite
section of the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, this hotel was sold and rebranded as
a boutique resort after Hurricane Ivan caused significant damage to the main
hotel in 2004. As a result, many areas of the hotel feel like they could belong
to a bigger resort. Its sprawling pool and massive fitness center, for example,
are larger than most guests would expect for a resort this size. Other areas,
such as the modest lobby and small spa, are more consistent with a boutique
resort. The hotel also has a mixed identity when it comes to style, with the
guest rooms retaining a generic, chain-like look, contrasting with the modern
design of the pool area. The large common areas lend
themselves to a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere and guests rarely need to compete
for a spot by the pool or on the beach. This property attracts an even mix of couples and families.
Excellent location on Seven Mile Beach, within walking distance of numerous restaurants and shops
Grand Cayman Beach Suites is located on the western side of
Grand Cayman on Seven Mile Beach, the island’s main tourist center. Although
the street in front of the hotel, West Bay Road, is a busy thoroughfare,
sidewalks running along both sides make it quite walkable. Plenty of
restaurants, shops, and a grocery store are within walking distance,
including the Camana Bay shopping center.
The hotel is a 10-minute drive from George Town and the
airport. It’s less than a 15-minute drive to Cayman Island Turtle Farm, one
of the most popular attractions in West Bay.
Rooms have kitchenettes, separate living areas, iPod docks, and ocean-view balconies
The 53 rooms at Grand Cayman Beach Suites have cheerful
lemon-yellow and jade-green walls, which go a long way toward brightening up furniture
that looks straight out of the 1990s. All rooms have separate living areas
with sofa beds, grayish-red armchairs, and dated wooden furniture, including glass-topped dining tables, set on old-fashioned
TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi are standard. Kitchenettes are
equipped with sinks, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, toasters, and a small selection of plates and cutlery. Bedrooms have flat-screen
TVs set in clunky cabinets with roller doors. Two-bedroom suites have larger dining tables.
face toward the ocean, offering either full
balconies or French balconies, which open along the entire length of the wall, effectively transforming the room itself into a balcony. Bathrooms are not particularly stylish, featuring round soaking tubs with bland
tropical shower curtains. Counter tops are stocked with Rusk bath products, and
many have dual sinks. Some also have separate showers.
Stylish outdoor swimming pools, restaurant and lounge, and direct access to Seven Mile Beach
While the rooms at Grand Cayman Beach don't fully meet the expectations for an upscale resort, the features deliver what's expected of a property in this pearl level. The hotel
has two freshwater swimming pools, the Palm Pool and the Turtle Pool. The
Turtle Pool is set in front of SIDEbar, and features a built-in hot tub. It
serves as the kids’ pool until early evening, when SIDEbar opens. Box-shaped
planters protrude into the adjacent Palm Pool, creating an interesting look. This
pool includes a swim-up bar with submerged seating and a thatched-roof, which serves drinks and
snacks. It also offers a small dry seating area with patio
furniture. Both pools are surrounded by navy blue loungers with attached canopies.
area opens up onto a wide, picturesque stretch of Seven Mile Beach. This
stunning strip of white sand is lined with rows of the same navy loungers found
by the pool.
The hotel’s restaurant, Hemingway's, is open for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner. Set in a freestanding building, the restaurant is reminiscent
of a colonial plantation, with a chic neutral color scheme and decorative pillars.
Patio seating overlooks the beach and the hotel’s pools. The menu focuses on
Caribbean cuisine and seafood. It draws a fair number of non-guests, so
reservations are advised.
SIDEbar is a hip lounge, which offers seating in a low-lit
interior or out on a terrace overlooking the Turtle Pool. Serving drinks and
gastro-pub fare, the bar is particularly popular during happy hour.
independently-owned La Mer Spa is on-site offering facials, massages, manicures, and a range
of other treatments. There’s a roomy
24/7 fitness center with dumbbells, treadmills, and a variety of other cardio
machines and weight-training equipment. And guests receive preferred tee times and reduced green fees at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Britannia Golf Course.
There are two meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 60 people, along with a lovely rooftop deck that’s often used for
wedding ceremonies. The hotel
also includes a branch of Red Sail Sports, which offers scuba diving,
snorkeling, sailing, and other water sport activities. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
Seasonal kids’ camp programming is offered from November to
March. Room service is available. There’s free parking on-site and free Wi-Fi
