Bottom Line

From its hilltop perch, Somerville Hotel offers stunning views of the harbor below, with St. Aubin’s Fort in the distance. The vista sets the mood, and with its no-children policy, this upscale hotel offers  privacy and quiet. Some of the Standard Rooms are small, and not all rooms have coveted harbor views, so the Superior Rooms are a safer bet. It's a short walk to the waterfront, and St. Aubin's restaurants, but the hotel's own Tides Restaurant is not to be missed. While there's no spa or fitness center here, the seasonal outdoor pool and stone-lined terrace provide places to unwind after a hike around town.

Oyster Hotel Review

Somerville Hotel

Scene

Upscale dining overlooking the marina

The dapper Somerville Hotel was renovated in 2015, which modernized its fitting French boutique design and traditional English style. Muted walls and floors allow some of the rich natural wood to stand out in the lobby, and colorful chandeliers draw attention to restrained pops of color here and there on the furnishing's rich upholstery.

Location

Above the harbor in St. Aubin

This hillside location above the village of St Aubin is a short walk to the marina and a sandy beach, though it can be a steep climb back to the hotel. All the town's dining and boutique shops are nearby, including regular weekend markets. The island's main attractions in St. Helier are a good 10-minute drive around the bay, and the Jersey Airport is about a 10-minute drive north.

Rooms

Small rooms with modern bathrooms

All 59 rooms and suites were renovated in early 2015 and have a contemporary neutral palette decor of softly patterned carpets and dark wood furniture. Many of the standard rooms are surprisingly small, but elegant accents like wall moldings and shaded sconces add character. Superior rooms have sitting areas with plush chairs and ottomans, while the few suites add private terraces, wet bars, and mini-fridges. Some rooms have harbor views, while others face inland (these rooms might actually be quieter). The bathrooms are newly done in white tile with wood floors, and heated towel racks. Most have shower/tub combos, though the suites also have walk-in rainfall showers.

Features

Outdoor pool, library lounge, Tides Restaurant and bar, free breakfast

The hotel makes the most of its brilliant location with great outdoor spaces centered around the small outdoor heated pool. Grassy lawn areas stretch out to either side, enclosed by low hedges that don't impede the view. A stone terrace provides outdoor table seating for the bar, which serves afternoon tea, and a light menu at night with cocktails and wine. Tides Restaurant is a local favorite, treating guests to the island's fresh seafood and produce. It serves a free full English breakfast and dinner fare such as salmon gravlax with candied beet root, and quail's egg saffron aioli. Jersey Royals, the island's local potatoes, are regulars on the menu, paired with tasty companions such as roasted cod and pan-fried sea bream.
