Bottom Line

The 93-room Holiday Inn Express Cherokee/Casino is a two-and-a-half-pearl option with a convenient location across the street from Harrah's Cherokee Casino. It's also a short drive from other attractions in the area. Rooms are basic and a bit old school, but include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Wi-Fi is free only for IHG Rewards members, though the program is free to join. The free breakfast includes a selection of hot and cold items, and free coffee and tea are available 24/7. The outdoor pool is a plus in the summer, and there's a small fitness center, too. On-site parking is plentiful and free. Alternatively, travelers looking to save on rates could check out the Rodeway Inn & Suites On The River instead, where some rooms have whirlpool tubs and balconies.

Scene

Basic chain hotel suitable for budget-conscious guests visiting the casino

This basic three-story hotel is typical of the chain, though given the quality of some of the more modern Holiday Inn Express properties that we've seen lately, the old-school style is a little disappointing. The small lobby is sunny and bright, with a few chairs where guests can perch if they need to wait. The breakfast room is adjacent, and the lobby leads into the hallway for first-floor rooms. There's not much in the way of public space at this property, but most guests are here for activities outside the hotel. It's a popular spot for families and couples, as well as groups visiting the casino across the street.

Location

Located across the street from Harrah's Casino, a short drive from attractions

This hotel is situated in the town of Cherokee, across the street from Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort. The area is filled with other hotels and many fast food outlets and other eateries. Guests can park their car for free at the hotel and walk across the street to visit the casino. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is a four-minute drive from the hotel, and the Unto These Hills Theater, where a summer outdoor drama tells the story of the Cherokee, is a six-minute drive. The entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park is only a 15-minute drive away. Skiing in Maggie Valley can be reached in 25 minutes by car. The closest airport, Asheville Regional Airport, is a little over an hour away by car, but most guests drive their own cars to the hotel.

Rooms

Simple rooms with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers

Rooms here are simple, with blue patterned carpeting, white bed linens atop gold bed skirts, blue drapery, and medium-toned wood furniture. Traditional art hangs on beige walls. It's an old-school look that's not as fresh as some of the more modern Holiday Inn properties we've seen in recent years. Small desks and cushy armchairs are nice extras, along with the choice of hard or soft pillows -- a standard across the brand. Amenities include flat-screen TVs with premium channels, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, microwaves, and free internet access. Wi-Fi is free in rooms only for IHG rewards members, though this loyalty program comes with no fees. Bathrooms also are basic, with shower/tub combos, toiletries, and hairdryers. Past guests have noted that thin walls can translate to some noise between rooms.

Features

Free breakfast, outdoor pool, fitness center, business center, and free parking

This hotel offers only a few basic features. A free breakfast buffet with hot and cold selections is served daily in a sunny breakfast room. Guests also can hang out in this area on the sofa in front of a stone fireplace with a TV above, and there's a desk with a computer for guests to use. The outdoor pool is open seasonally, and lounge chairs are available for relaxing poolside. The tiny fitness center has just two treadmills and a stationary bike. Towels and water are provided. The business center consists of a small desk with a computer and printer for guests to use. On-site parking is free. Wi-Fi is free for IHG rewards members only, which is free to join.
