Bottom Line

Baan Klang Wiang is a charming, colonial-style boutique set in the heart of Chiang Mai's historic old town, about a 10- to 15-minute drive from the airport. Hidden down a quiet alley, the tiny retreat has only ten rooms, all of them spacious and furnished with elegant Lanna Thai decor, four-poster canopy beds, sofas, desks, polished wooden floors, and plenty of amenities like multi-disc DVD, CD, iPod players, large flat screen TVs, and bathrobes and slippers. The resort has just a small swimming pool and a pleasant set of tables in the garden where guests can order breakfast, but there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby for all necessities. The resort is perfect for those looking for an intimate and private getaway in the heart of the city with plenty of peace and quiet, and the rates are competitive -- certainly not cheap, but pretty much on par with the surrounding competition.

Baan Klang Wiang

Scene

Well-suited for couples and guests who want a charming boutique stay in an intimate spot

Baan Klang Wiang is a very quiet and tranquil place. With only ten rooms, there isn't much hustle and bustle, and you won't see other guests unless they happen to be relaxing at the various comfortable little niches around the small property; in the small terrace by the pool; in the art-filled lobby; or around the courtyard breakfast niche.

Clientele here tend to be older -- or at least fairly well-heeled -- travelers who want a peaceful and charming stay in old Chiang Mai. You won't find any parties going on here, and being across the street from a temple, the guests here tend to mimic the monks, rising and going to bed early. The overall vibe is refined and elegant, if not entering the realm of being upscale.

Location

Down a small side street in old town Chiang Mai, near major sights, dining, and only 15 minutes drive from the airport

Baan Klang Wiang is located down a small side street hidden away within the moat of Chiang Mai's historical old city. It's only a 15-minute drive from the airport, and most of the old temples and sights of the ancient city can be reached by foot. The Sunday Night Market and Saturday Walking Street Market are also within a 10 minutes' walk from here, and downtown is about 10 minutes by car. It's a great location as it is central, yet quiet and peaceful, and there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to choose from -- all within a short walk of the hotel.

Rooms

Elegant boutique rooms with high ceilings, Lanna decor, four-poster canopy beds, sofas, desks, and multi-disc DVD/iPod/CD players

The rooms at Baan Klang Wiang are spacious, airy, and attractive. They have polished wood floors, four-poster canopy beds, and Lanna northern Thai decor, as well as high ceilings, writing desks, sofas, and rattan chairs. Amenities include large hot water heaters for coffee and tea, mini-fridges with small selections of free snacks and soft drinks, large flat-screen TVs with abundant cable channels, multi-disc CD/DVD/iPod players, and fast, free Wi-Fi. Rooms here come in Superior, Deluxe, and Suite options, mostly differentiated by size (the suites have small living room areas). The only drawback to the lovely rooms is the lack of balconies or views (all rooms face back into an enclosed garden with no sitting areas, except the suite rooms which do look out at the temple across the way). Plus, there are no bathtubs in the bathrooms -- only showers.

Features

Small swimming pool, cozy courtyard, and lobby niches for relaxing

This tiny resort has few features, other than plenty of cozy niches in which to sit and read or relax. There is a small swimming pool in the garden, big enough for a dip on a hot afternoon -- but that's about it. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but it does serve breakfast upon request (one must order the previous evening) at the few tables in the courtyard. This area, along with the small terrace by the pool, and the artsy lobby, are the best places to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
