Bottom Line

Baan Orapin is a tiny bed-and-breakfast set in a charming 100-year-old traditional Thai house. The resort hides behind a gate on the river road on the east side of the Ping River, away from the tourist hordes, yet only 15 to 20 minutes by foot into the heart of downtown. There are only 15 rooms here, all with fine wood floors, four-poster teak beds, rainfall showers, safes, televisions, and free Wi-Fi. The grounds and old buildings on the property are lovely, and it's a quiet retreat from the traffic outside, although there aren't any major features other than a small swimming pool and pleasant indoor/outdoor niche for having breakfast. It's a good choice for those looking for a quiet and alternative stay in an intimate old home, which is fairly priced against the competition.

Baan Orapin Bed and Breakfast

Scene

Quiet and tranquil, this hotel is a good spot for couples who appreciate an intimate stay in a old traditional family home.

There isn't much of a scene at Baan Orapin as its focus is on relaxation. As this is a small, non-traditional bed-and-breakfast, there are no major hangout spots here other than the small swimming pool and pleasant little breakfast niche. While on the property, most guests either relax in their rooms or spend time on the grounds or in the library area, located inside the 100-year-old house. It's a tranquil spot, and will be appreciated by couples (there aren't too many large-sized or family-style rooms) and those looking for an intimate stay with a friendly Thai family in their gorgeous home.

Location

On the less touristy east side of the river, only a 15- to 20-minute walk to downtown and the Night Bazaar

The bed-and-breakfast is located on the east side of the Ping River, which is less touristy than the other side. It's still close enough to get to the Night Bazaar and downtown on foot though, as they are only about 15 to 20 minutes away. The resort sits off the road and is quiet, but the traffic outside on the river road is horrible, and rather dangerous to walk along -- especially during rush hour -- as it is quite narrow. The historical old city is 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi or tuk tuk and the airport is about 20 to 25 minutes by car.

Rooms

Wood-floored rooms with Thai decor, four-poster teak wood canopy beds, sitting terraces, and free Wi-Fi

There are only 15 rooms at Baan Orapin, but they are all cozy and boutique-styled with Thai decor. Floors are polished wood, and each room has a four-poster teak wood canopy bed. Additionally, rooms are outfitted with personal safe boxes, mini-fridges, and electric hot water kettles, and all come with free Wi-Fi. The rooms have televisions but they aren't flat-screen and are small. Every room has either a small balcony or terrace sitting area out front. The bathrooms are small, but do all have rainfall showers, and the Deluxe Junior Suites come with bathtubs as well. The standard superior rooms are a bit on the small side, but the cost for upgrading to the fancier digs is very reasonable. It's well worth the extra small charge to go for the higher-end rooms like the One Bedroom Suites, as they have living rooms, daybeds, and plenty of space.
