Bottom Line

Opened in November 2016, Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort is a charming luxury property offering a quiet escape along Ping River, about a 20-minute walk from the Old City walls. The hotel's design is inspired by the late-19th century, with colonial-style wood furniture, woven cloths, and patterned tiling. This look continues in the 45 elegant rooms, all of which have furnished terraces, free (albeit spotty) Wi-Fi, and an array of toiletries. Most have separate showers and tubs, and four huge units have access to a shared private pool. A chic outdoor pool adjacent to a huge 100-year-old rain tree acts as the centerpiece, plus there are an all-day restaurant serving Thai and international fare, a rooftop bar above it, and another pool bar. A small spa offers a range of treatments, and there are a few pieces of outdoor exercise equipment. Families may prefer the more kid-friendly Shangri-La Hotel Chiang Mai.

Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort

Scene

Charming, secluded hotel with colonial-style design and a striking 100-year-old tree

Opened in November 2016 along Ping River, Na Nirand lives up to its name with a romantic atmosphere and boutique design. A magnificent 100-year-old rain tree is the focal point here, and the hotel's design was inspired by the corresponding late-19th century and King Rama V's reign. Two-story buildings are done in a half-wood Lanna-Colonial style, with charming patterned tiling in hallways, lots of sleek wood, and traditional woven elements. Elephant details are found throughout to reflect the area's history with them: painted figurines at turndown, shaped towels, and in artwork. Most rooms and their terraces face the courtyard pool, which limits privacy, though the four-unit House of Colonial faces the river and a shared private pool.

While the atmosphere is generally quiet and suitable for relaxing, thin walls, early-morning roosters, and bells from the adjacent temple have led to some noise complaints. This hotel is best suited to couples on a romantic getaway, though families with kids are still found here. Additionally, the hotel organizes on-site weddings and offers wedding and honeymoon packages.

Location

Peaceful setting along Ping River, but a 20-minute walk to the edge of Old City

For travelers that want to be outside the bustle of Chiang Mai's Old City, Na Nirand has a great location. It's situated along Ping River and a bit back from the road, allowing for a largely quiet atmosphere. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the edge of the Old City, though top sights such as Wat Pra Singh are 36 minutes away. Otherwise, it's about a five- to 10-minute drive. Taxis and tuk-tuks are both available for cheap. Temples, eateries, coffee shops, and clothing stores abound here. The Anusarn Market and Chiang Mai Night Bazaar are a closer 10-minute walk. Chiang Mai International Airport is just under 15 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Gorgeous rooms with traditional style, modern amenities, and swish bathrooms, plus furnished terraces

The 45 rooms here are elegant and attractive, done in a traditional style incorporating lots of sleek wood, carved detailing, and hanging lamps with fringe. Design varies by room category, and some have lovely patterned tiling, handwoven cloth headboards, and patterned pottery. Regardless of type, all have furnished terraces either facing the pool, adjacent buildings, or the river. Unfortunately, those facing the pool and on the ground floor have limited privacy. Also on the downside, many past guests have complained of thin walls leading to noise issues. Nevertheless, the spacious rooms are well-equipped, all with flat-screen TVs, desks, sitting areas, free (spotty) Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibars, free water, electronic safes, and closets with robes, slippers, and sandals.

Bathrooms are a highlight, all with rainfall showers, an array of luxe toiletries, and hairdryers. All but the entry-level Romantic Lanna Deluxe units have big bathrooms with separate bathtubs. There are four individually decorated units in the more private and quiet House of Colonial, each with living spaces and access to a small shared pool overlooking the river.

Features

Lovely outdoor pool, a small spa, and riverfront eatery with a rooftop bar

Although a small property, all the expected amenities are offered here. When on-site, most guests congregate around the central pool, which has a few loungers within the water and more (although a limited number) surrounding it. Next to here is a bar serving cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks, set in a traditional two-story rice barn that can be booked for private dinners or functions. Also by the pool is the small spa, which has two rooms equipped for couples and outdoor showers. A variety of treatments are on offer, such as body scrubs and aromatherapy massages. Just outside by the pool are a handful of exercise equipment, which will be a disappointment for those wanting a true fitness center. Daily activities are offered for free, as are bikes for borrow.

For dining, TIME Riverfront Cuisine & Bar is open all day, with indoor seating in a window-filled space and an al fresco terrace by the river. The buffet breakfasts have a variety of hot and cold fare, both Asian and Western options, as well as a made-to-order egg station. Lunch and dinner menus have a la carte Thai and international dishes. Afternoon tea is also offered. Above here is a rooftop bar with comfy couch seating and views over the river and grounds. Room service is available.

Huan Kammung is a Lanna-style teak house with a few rooms available for events or for lounging. Two computers for guest use are also located here. Wedding planning services and packages are available, and most past celebrations have taken place under the beautiful rain tree.
