Some of the bungalows look worn
The Romyen Garden Resort is a sleepy, lush resort located about 20 minutes outside of Chiang Mai down a dirt road -- yet it's just minutes from the main road into town. There are only six bungalows here, ranging from a divided smaller one to an entire house suitable for large groups. While some of the bungalows are pretty rustic, others look brighter and more modern. All bungalows come with televisions, DVD players, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi and breakfast, large beds, and small desks, along with outdoor decks. Some of the bigger bungalows have kitchens. The resort does not have any facilities other than a small restaurant where breakfast is served and dinners can be ordered. It's a great spot if you are looking for peace and quiet but while the bungalows do have rustic charm, some of them look pretty worn, and the prices are certainly not as low as what some may expect for the area.
Scene
Chilled-out nature escape close to town, suitable for couples and families looking to get away from it all
The Romyen Garden Resort is a place for chilling out and not doing much. Despite being only 20 minutes from town and just near the main road into it, the resort is hidden in the forest and feels very rural and remote. Party lovers will not be heading here, and it is more of a spot for families and couples to unwind. Guests mostly stick to their bungalows, which are self-contained and have nice decks, but the restaurant sala is the only public spot that can be remotely called "happening" here -- and even that's a stretch.
Location
Located in a rural and rustic setting that's nonetheless near a main highway into town, about a 20-minute drive from the city center
Romyen Garden Resort is located outside of Chiang Mai, around 20 minutes drive east of town along the Chiang Rai Highway. The resort itself is off the highway down a side road and then dirt road, and it feels very remote and rural despite being just minutes from the highway. The resort is very green, surrounded by forest and fields, and is a quiet escape from the city. While it is a tranquil retreat, there are not any restaurants, bars, or shops within walking distance of the resort, although there are bicycles for use at the resort and once out on the highway, there is a regular bus into town.
Rooms
Unique wood bungalows that are rustic -- some more appealing than others
There are only six bungalows at the Romyen Garden, and they are all extremely different. The standard Double is located in the front side of Bungalow 2, a single bungalow with two split sides. This room is pretty small and quite dark as it features all-wood interiors, yet the bathroom is modern and bright, and looks up-to-date. The room consists only of a large bed, television, DVD player, and mini-fridge. There is a small desk, but the TV sits on it so it really can't be used. There is a small closet, but it doesn't have a safe box or robe or any of the normal items a resort usually has. There is a large deck to sit on outside with a daybed and cushions, and the room (same with all units) comes with free Wi-Fi and breakfast. The larger Deluxe Bungalow 3 has a separate kitchen, but it is more like a garage space and only has a large refrigerator, sink, electric hot water kettle, and lots of open space. The Family Bungalow number 5 is the most unique choice, as it is a two-story wood building with three (very) small bedrooms upstairs, one of which is a bunk-bed room only big enough for the bed. Downstairs there is a large living room with lots of sofas, tables, and chairs, and ceilings that six-footers will have to duck to walk under. The back side of the bungalow is a huge open kitchen with two toilets and three showers that resemble something out of camp days, and the area is big enough for a very, very large group. Some of the bungalows look quite worn while others have rustic charm. The bathroom in number 3 is pretty dark and dingy, while the standard number 2 has one that is bright and cheerful.
Features
Small restaurant serving the included breakfast and other meals upon request; not much else
There is a small restaurant, a wooden bungalow on stilts that is out in the garden, which has a few tables and serves the free breakfast. While it doesn't really have lunch or dinner hours, the staff will serve meals on request as long as they are ordered in advance, as they know the resort is far from town and other places to eat. Other than this, the resort really doesn't have any other facilities. There is a ping-pong table that gets brought out on request, plenty of space for relaxing or sunbathing out on the lawn, a hammock overlooking a pond, and bicycles for guests to use. Mainly, it's a place to relax and get away from it all.
