Bottom Line

The 45-room Viang Thapae Hotel is an upper-middle-range option with an excellent location about a five-minute walk from the Tha Phae Gate and within walking distance of numerous restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions. Rooms are colorful and contemporary, and stocked with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, electric kettles, and safes. Some have balconies or terraces, and some open directly to one of the two outdoor pools. A free breakfast buffet offers a limited selection of Thai and Western options, some hot. The gardens here are beautiful and peaceful, and there's a terrace where guests can hang out. Travelers who would like to be even closer to the Old City for slightly lower rates could check out the Hotel M Chiang Mai, though it's not quite as filled with character.

Viang Thapae Resort

Scene

Charming, colorful little hotel with beautiful gardens and relaxing public areas

This charming little place is colorful and stylish, and provides an authentic Thai experience. That impression starts right away, in the spacious open lobby, which is cozy and welcoming, with plenty of seating where guests can relax and hang out. Colorful Thai decorative items add character, while tables are stacked with books, magazines, and newspapers. Hallways to guest rooms are nicely decorated with interesting Thai items. A terrace adjacent to reception provides bench seating, and colorful banners and lanterns hang overhead. Lush tropical greenery and flowers are found everywhere throughout the property, and the gardens are tranquil and beautiful. The hotel is most popular with couples, but families, groups, individuals, and even businesspeople are seen here.
