Bottom Line

Housed inside one of the nation’s first indoor shopping centers, the upper-middle-range Hyatt Regency Cleveland at The Arcade features gorgeous Victorian-style architecture and a majestic, massive skylight ceiling. Its 293 rooms vary in size and decor, and while renovated rooms are sleek and stylish, un-renovated ones appear tired and dated. On-site features include a spa, a modern fitness center, and extensive event space, as well as a restaurant, lounge, and coffee bar. While competitively priced for a downtown property, travelers might want to compare rates with the nearby Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown, which offers exceptionally large rooms in a historic building.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hyatt Regency Cleveland at The Arcade

Scene

Spectacular historic building busy with social events

Housed in a historic arcade that opened in 1890 as one of the nation’s first indoor shopping centers, this Hyatt hotel features gorgeous Victorian-style architecture that includes four stories of brass-trimmed balconies and majestic staircases. Its spectacular glass skylight ceiling spans over 300 feet across the five-story atrium, with the top three floors occupied by the hotel. The bottom floors remain open to the public, so guests with inner atrium views can see a steady stream of daytime visitors enjoying the elegant atmosphere. On weekends, the atrium’s ground floor is a popular venue for weddings, making the public spaces a warm and festive place. The spacious lobby, like other components of the hotel, are former storefronts, so the hotel is somewhat spread out among the lovely atrium and two attached towers.

Location

Inside historic mall and adjacent to Fourth Street Entertainment District in downtown Cleveland

The hotel is located inside The Arcade in downtown Cleveland, which has some retail shops as well as dining options. It's adjacent to Cleveland’s Fourth Street Entertainment District, which has dozens of restaurants, nightclubs, shops, and entertainment venues including a bowling alley. Many other restaurants and nightclubs are within a few minutes’ walk. Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena are about a six- to eight-minute walk, while First Energy Stadium and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum are both about a 15-minute walk. It’s a seven-minute walk to the convention center and a nine-minute walk to the Global Center for Health Innovation (Medical Mart). Cleveland Hopkins International Airport can be reached in 20- to 25-minutes driving, or 40 minutes via the Red Line rapid transit system, which is a two-minute walk from the hotel. Case Western Reserve University’s campus is 15 minutes by car (30 minutes by bus) and Cleveland State University is a five-minute drive (10 minutes by bus). The Cleveland Clinic is 15 minutes away by car (23 minutes by bus), as are the Cleveland Museum of Art and Cleveland Botanical Garden. The surrounding area is considered safe, but some guests have reported being approached by panhandlers immediately outside the hotel's entrances.

Rooms

Spacious rooms, but sizes vary and un-renovated rooms appear tired and dated

Rooms are generally spacious, though they can vary in size significantly. For example, both Standard and Arcade King Rooms are between 400- and 600-square-feet, while Arcade Suites are 600- to 800-square-feet. About a third of the rooms have been renovated, while the rest are scheduled for completion in the next two years. Renovated options consist of the Arcade Rooms and Suites and have substantially more modern decor than the un-renovated rooms, which look dated with light wood furniture, brown patterned carpets, and striped drapes. Furnishings here include upholstered armchairs and small glass tables that resemble patio furniture. Renovated rooms offer a deeper, richer color scheme dominated by chocolate brown and beige drapes, patterned carpets, and tan walls with colorful modern artwork. The furniture is a darker brown and sleeker in appearance, including dressers, corner desks with data ports, and one-piece headboard/nightstands. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, electronic safes, coffeemakers, phones, and free Wi-Fi. Suites also add a separate sitting area with a sofa and a second flat-screen TV, while the largest VIP Suite, which measures 1,100-square-feet, includes a separate living room and dining area. Renovated bathrooms replace standard granite vanities with more distinctive, dark brown marble vanities with basin-style rectangular sinks. Standard hotel tile has been replaced by polished tan marble framing the rainfall shower/tub combos. Guests should note that Arcade Rooms offer an inner Arcade view, and poor soundproofing means that noise might be an issue, especially during events.
