Oyster Hotel Review

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham College Station South

Scene

Colorful, contemporary hotel that draws a mix of business and leisure travelers

The La Quinta opened in 2015 and it has retained its fresh, contemporary feel. Interiors are fairly attractive and depart from a bland chain-hotel look, with modern decor and punchy accents in bright violet and neon green. The lobby is a striking space, with lots of natural light and graphic-print carpeting, and a huge photomural of the Texas A&M University campus hangs behind the reception desk. The hotel gets a large number of guests in town to visit children at college and attend sporting events at the university, or to do business at the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center. Families are also drawn to the indoor pool and hot tub, and the  affordable rates.

Location

Off Highway 6 near medical center, 10-minute drive from Kyle Field and Texas A & M center

The La Quinta is off Texas Highway 6 across from the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center near a bank, supermarket, and fast-food restaurants. Brian Bachmann Community Park is a three-minute drive, and Post Oak Mall, the Museum of the American G.I.,  and Santa’s Wonderland are about five minutes by car. Texas World Speedway and the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History are a 10-minute drive, and the center of Bryan, with its dining, shopping, farmer’s market, antiques mall, and Greyhound station, is 15 minutes by car.

At about a 10-minute drive from Kyle Field (Texas A&M University Aggies football stadium) and the central campus, the hotel isn’t quite as close as many other area hotels. Reed Arena (Aggies basketball) and the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum are both a little more than 10 minutes by car. Easterwood Airport is also a 10-minute drive from La Quinta.

Rooms

Spacious and colorful, with microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi

The spacious guest rooms have a fresh, contemporary look. Furniture is slate gray, bedding is all-white, and violet walls and neon green chairs give the spaces a jolt of color. The graphic-print decorative throws on the beds and framed photography on the walls are additional nice touches. All 89 units are well-maintained, and feature pillowtop bedding as well as 39-inch flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms do not have safes, but there are safety deposit boxes at the front desk. Suites add sofa beds. Bathrooms are spacious and have ample counter space, and all contain hairdryers, toiletries, and most have shower/tub combos (some have only showers).

Features

Indoor pool and hot tub, fitness center, and free hot breakfast, but no full restaurant

The hotel offers amenities that are in line with similar properties in the area. The highlight feature is the indoor heated swimming pool, about 10 meters in length, situated in a natural-light-filled space with a concrete deck, hot tub, and a few loungers. There's also a fitness center with several up-to-date cardio machines, plus free weights and a weight machine. There's no full restaurant on-site (several fast food sit-down chains are in the area) but La Quinta offers a free breakfast buffet that draws mostly positive reviews from previous guests. It includes an ample spread of make-your-own waffles, hot eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausages, and wide range of cold items. Other amenities include a business center, meeting rooms, lobby convenience store, coin-op laundry, 24-hour front desk, free on-site parking, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Up to two pets per room are allowed, with no fee or weight limit.
