Decameron Aquarium

This resort is housed in several unusual circular buildings that sit over the Caribbean, providing a stunning setting that unfortunately isn't always capitalized upon. Walkways over the water connect the buildings, and a long wooden dock provides access to a natural pool where guests can relax on the dock, snorkel, and take mini-scuba lessons. Guests check in in the huge two-level lobby that is often chaotic and filled with guests coming and going. There are many seating areas where guests can hang out, and these areas are often filled with guests waiting to check in. Large windows provide lots of natural light, and views of the sea are nice. This place isn't fancy by any means, and will be most suitable for unfussy families and groups looking to save money on all-inclusive packages. Couples looking for romance -- especially honeymooners -- may be disappointed. 

This hotel is situated in Punta Hansa on the northern end of San Andres. Guests who arrive at Aeropuerto Internacional Gustavo Rojas Pinilla have less than a 10-minute drive to reach the hotel, and the beach is just five minutes away on foot. There's not much immediately around the hotel, other than a few local businesses across the street, and a car and motorcycle rental place. Guests who want to take advantage of amenities at other Decameron properties on the island must provide their own transportation. Johnny Cay Park is about 10 minutes away by car. 

Situated in several circular buildings, rooms are basic, but bright, as natural light streams in through large windows. Walls are white, but ceilings are painted the same tan as the tile floor, and white bed linens are complemented by tan bed skirts. Brightly colored tropical art hangs on the wall, and chair cushions are in bold hues such as lime green and orange. It's not exactly a fresh look, and feels a bit dated. The grimy tile floors are particularly in need of some attention. All rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges by request. Wi-Fi and safes come with a fee, and don't expect in-room minibars to be included with your all-inclusive rates. Compact bathrooms feature granite countertops, magnifying mirrors, hairdryers, walk-in showers, and toiletries. All rooms have terraces or balconies furnished with plastic chairs, and those overlooking the Caribbean Sea have spectacular views. Suites feature separate living areas. Keep in mind that rooms near the restaurant and nightclub will hear some noise well into the evening. 

This place is a fairly typical all-inclusive property, though the lack of included in-room booze is a disappointment (as is the fact that the beach is off-site). Restaurants available in the all-inclusive package include two that serve buffet-style meals and three a la carte options: Italian, Thai, and steaks. Additionally, there are two bars: One at the dock that's open 24/7 and a swim-up option by the pool. There's also a nightclub. Reservations are required for the a la carte restaurants, and they can only be made in person on the morning of the dinner. Waits can sometimes be long, and the restaurants fill up quickly, resulting in frustrations for guests. It's also worth noting that included drinks don't get the best reception from previous guests.

Three outdoor pools include one for adults, one for kids, and a saltwater option. Lounge chairs are available on the deck, but the atmosphere is not usually relaxing. The Rocky Cay Beach Club -- which is off-site -- offers snacks and drinks, restrooms, showers, lounge chairs, and towels. Keep in mind that you have to reserve a spot at the beach club in advance, and offerings there are covered by all-inclusive rates. Guests also have access to facilities at other Decameron properties on the island, except for the Royal Decameron Isleno, but transportation is not provided.

Non-motorized water sports are included in all-inclusive rates. Among the options are kayaking, sea bicycles, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, and surfing. Mini-scuba classes are offered in the natural pool. Motorized water sports are available for an additional fee. Activities are offered daily for both kids and adults, and there is evening entertainment as well. 

Meeting spaces accommodate leisure and business gatherings for up to 120 people, and a couple of computers are set up on the upper level of the lobby for guests to use. Wi-Fi carries a fee throughout the property.
