Bottom Line

The 100-room Spa at Norwich Inn is an upper-middle-range colonial-style property on expansive grounds with gardens and pools. Traditionally decorated rooms feature mahogany beds and sitting areas, while some suites also have whirlpool tubs. Villas with kitchenettes and fireplaces are also available. Property features include an enormous spa, two tennis courts, and three pools, and a golf course is next door. There's also a modern gym with various classes such as meditation, yoga, and Pilates, but most incur a fee. Multiple meeting rooms and a ballroom make the property popular for events. The restaurant serves both healthy and classic comfort food and the pub offers weekly Ladies Night and live entertainment. It may be worth comparing prices at The Fox Tower, where the rooms have a more contemporary feel.

The Spa at Norwich Inn

Scene

Historic spa retreat set on sprawling grounds

The Spa at Norwich Inn is a four-story colonial-style hotel geared toward travelers who want an all-day spa retreat. The property's 42 acres consist of manicured gardens, ponds, and reflecting pools, and there's even an apiary with beehives. Interiors walls are covered in wallpaper and common areas have chandeliers, wingback chairs, and oil paintings, which can give the hotel a dated appearance. As it’s a large property, car service is sometimes provided to help guests get from their rooms to the spa.

The hotel was built in 1929, and over the years it attracted famous guests such as Frank Sinatra and George Bernard Shaw. However, after World War II the hotel business went into a slump; during this time the property was purchased by the City of Norwich and used to house prisoners. Hotel operations resumed again when the property was purchased by the Edward J. Safdie Group in 1983, followed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation in 1994, who still own the inn today.

Location

On a sprawling, secluded property with adjacent golf course

The spa is located halfway between New York City and Boston, making it a popular retreat for people from both locales. The hotel is on a sprawling, peaceful property surrounded by trees, down a long driveway off the busy West Thames Street. Behind the hotel is the 18-hole Norwich Golf Club. On the main drag, within five minutes on foot, are Joy’s Country Skillet and Great Oak Pizza, but nearby dining options are otherwise limited. It's about a 10-minute drive to Interstate 395. Foxwoods Casino is 20 minutes away via the hotel’s free shuttle and the Mohegan Sun Casino is a three-minute drive. The historic Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are half an hour away by car. Parking is free for overnight guests.

Rooms

Homey rooms and suites with old-world country charm, plus villas with fireplaces and kitchenettes

Decorated in traditional decor, rooms have an old-world country charm that may be a tad dated for some. They feature floral textiles, mahogany bed frames, patterned wallpaper, carpeting, and sitting areas with sofa beds; some suites also have lovely four-poster beds. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, free Wi-Fi, ironing facilities, and hairdryers. Windows face the gardens, courtyard, ponds and/or golf course. Bathrooms are wallpapered and most have shower/tub combos, though many of the villas have whirlpool tubs and separate showers. Hairdryers and toiletries are also provided.

There are 11 Junior Suites and four Signature Suites, some with two bathrooms. Well-equipped Villas are located near the outdoor pools, but these have dated bedspreads and green carpeting. Still, they include kitchenettes with small stoves, fireplaces, and balconies. Villa Duplexes have two floors with lofted bedrooms, two bathrooms, and Murphy beds in the living rooms.

Features

Expansive spa with pools, a restaurant and pub, event spaces, and a gift shop

The property's main draw is its huge spa, with 37 treatment rooms, a steam room, a sauna, a hot tub, and a hair salon. Treatments can be combined with wellness and fitness programs, including hiking, Pilates, yoga, and even tarot card readings. Morning walks and guided meditation are free for guests, but most classes will incur a charge. There are also two tennis courts on the property and lessons are available. The tiled indoor pool is stylish and gets lots of natural light, and there are two additional seasonal outdoor pools.

Dining options include the main Kensington’s restaurant, which serves classic comfort food and some healthier options, alongside a solid wine menu. There's also a healthy Juice Bar in the spa offering fresh juices and light meals. The wood-paneled Ascot’s pub has a lodge vibe, with its green leather chairs, fireplace, and fishing rods hung on the walls. It serves light meals and pub fare, and offers drink deals for Ladies Night Out on Tuesdays and weekly live entertainment. Parties, events, and meetings are commonly held in the eight event spaces, which include a ballroom and two patio areas. There's also a gift shop with souvenirs and clothing items. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
