Andersen Boutique Hotel

Situated in a large brick building, the Andersen Hotel contrasts its historic roots with quirky decor: a brightly colored mix of modern and retro kitsch. The lobby is part of a large lounge area -- guests relax with coffee and other drinks and snacks throughout the day, and mingle at the guest happy hour each evening -- outfitted in Philippe Starck-style furniture and a dramatic purple, black, and white color scheme. The breakfast restaurant is decorated in a bold, retro/modern style similar to the lounge bar, with clear plastic chairs, plenty of purple, and colorful images of iconic pop stars on the walls. The building also has a quiet courtyard with comfortable, umbrella-shaded seats, where guests can also relax after a day wandering the city. 

The Andersen Hotel is on the corner of a relatively quiet side street and a main road, less than two blocks from Copenhagen's central train station. The busy road of Vesterbrogade, with its many shops, cafes, and restaurants, is within a five-minute walk, as are the renowned Tivoli Gardens. From the train station, the airport is about 20 minutes away; any other point in or near the city can be easily reached by regular trains and buses that stop within minutes of the hotel. The red-light district is about three blocks away, which unnerves some guests, but the area around the hotel is safe to walk at all hours.

The rooms at the Andersen Hotel blend modern and retro styles, with bright and bold pop-art colors and geometric patterns on blankets and pillows. Rooms range in size, from small and almost cramped to more spacious -- suites have a separate sitting area. Some have quirky details like slanted walls. The bathrooms are modern, with combination shower/tubs, white tiling, and boldly colored walls and shower curtains. Considering the age of the building and its central location, rooms are reasonably soundproofed. However, if you like to sleep with the window open, opt for a room at the back of the hotel to eliminate traffic noise. Each room has free (though spotty on higher floors) Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, safe, and Molton Brown toiletries. 

In addition to the fresh, self-serve breakfast buffet -- that includes yogurt, cheeses, breads, and pastries -- the Andersen Hotel offers a lounge that's open to guests all day, a daily guest-only happy hour, and free (though spotty) Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. There are free newspapers and magazines in the lobby, luggage storage, and laundry and dry cleaning services. The hotel rents bikes and also arranges airport transfers. For business presentations and events, there is a large presentation room and conference center. If you take the stairs to your room, rather than the elevator, you'll find free bottles of water and an encouraging message at each landing. The hotel also offers all guests the choice of their signature Concept24 check-in/-out policy, which allows you to check out 24-hours after you check in (or the equivalent hour on the day of check-out), meaning you can sleep in without worry.
