Hotel Danmark

A blend of old and new styles is tastefully done here, where 1790- and 1969-built facades contrast one another, and 2017-renovated interiors are trendy. Maze-like hallways retain historic charm, although Thorvaldsen Museum-inspired oranges and mosaic effects here make a statement, as does the Danish design throughout. Expect jet-black walls, industrial metallics against wood paneling, and a classic finish from tufted sofas, glass-encased bottle displays, and sleek marble floors. Free evening wine hours at the lobby bar are popular, as are free morning coffee in the greenery-filled courtyard, and the adjacent restaurant (with which the hotel is in partnership) provides a lunch spot. The rooftop terrace is another frequented spot, thanks to lovely views, but drawbacks of small rooms and bathrooms are downsides. 

The hotel's central positioning is excellent, being opposite the National Museum of Denmark, and within a three-minute walk of Copenhagen City Hall and Square, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek's exhibits, and the Hans Christian Andersen Fairy-Tale house. Historic amusement Park, Tivoli Gardens, is a six-minute walk, while pedestrianized Stroget shopping street is three minutes farther. The Danish Design Center, Christiansborg Palace, and Copenhagen Central Station are a similar distance. Buzzing cafes and restaurants are plentiful in surrounding streets, and a hop-on, hop-off bus stops a block away. Copenhagen Airport is 19 minutes away, by car or public transport.

Chic rooms have an understated elegance in a handsome palette of muted grays, charcoals, blacks, and whites. Marbled floors and in-bedroom sinks contrast woven carpeting or Aiayu-branded fabrics, while chrome or iron accents in bed frames and lighting against leather headboards create an industrial finish. Admittedly, the 129-square-foot (12-square-meter) Singles are a squeeze, and Double Rooms are not much larger. The conceptual design still manages to fit in desks with blond-wood chairs, flat-screen TVs, wardrobes with safes and ironing facilities, and kettles alongside tea and coffee, but only Suites offer minibars (contents are free). 

Suites span a healthy 323 to 753 square feet (30 to 70 square meters), and some Deluxe-category rooms offer balconies with Tivoli Gardens views. Front-facing rooms can be noisy, and courtyard-facing ones are quieter. Unfortunately, thin drapes don't always block out daylight. Tiny bathrooms have rainfall showers, hairdryers, and REN-branded toiletries. A lack of AC is a drawback in summer, although fans are provided. Bunk Bed Rooms for up to six people are great for groups or families, and Family Suites have sofa beds. 

Stellar location and hip style are features in themselves here, although the property packs in a good amount for a city hotel. Included in some bookings, organic breakfasts offer all-you-can-eat granolas, Danish breads, pastries, a full continental spread, fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies, made-to-order teas, and coffees. Hot dishes are available for a surcharge. Meals are served in the well-regarded Tivolihallen Restaurant, where Danish specialities are popular. Red woods, ceramic decor, and old-fashioned wood seating create a cozy feel, while the far trendier lobby bar's has back-lit inlays and floor-to-ceiling black walls. This lounge serves free wine every evening (guests can also go to wine hours at sister properties), and it overlooks the courtyard. 

The cobbled courtyard is pretty with greenery and garden furniture, and lunches are served here in summers, as are free morning coffees (also served in the lobby). Note, the restaurant closes for dinner on Sundays. Views of church spires and Tivoli Gardens are sensational from the roof terrace with picnic tables and cushioned seating. The gym is due to open in December 2017. Until then, guests can use sister Hotel SP34's gym. Bike rentals are available. Paid, private parking is available off-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
