Bottom Line

Re-opened under a new name in 2014, the 118-room Hotel SP34 is an upscale property ideally located in Copenhagen's Latin Quarter, a five-minute walk from Rådhuspladsen and the popular Strøget shopping street. This design-conscious boutique combines modern minimalism with Scandinavian and industrial flair. The hotel’s on-site restaurants and bars are a cut above standard hotel fare, and the coffee shop and bar is a particularly lively spot frequented by tourists and locals alike. Rooms are more minimalistic than the common areas and have nice amenities including electric kettles, free Wi-Fi, and big wall-mounted flat-screen TVs; some have balconies and soaking tubs plus walk-in showers. There’s no air-conditioning, though, and street-facing rooms can get noise from outside. For something with a more historic atmosphere, travelers could try the Scandic Palace Hotel, which occupies a historic art nouveau building right on City Hall Square.

Hotel SP34

Scene

Design-conscious, upscale hotel where modern minimalism meets Scandinavian and industrial flair

Announcing its modern, minimalistic style right from the start, the four-pearl Hotel SP34 sits in a two-toned gray corner building with yellow window awnings. In the lobby, light gray concrete floors meet white walls while hanging bare bulbs offer industrial flair. Wine-red and blue couches are gathered together on a large rug under a long skylight that lets in lots of natural light. The self-proclaimed style here is “luxury bohemian,” and this property takes creative cues from the streets with unique accents such as walls inspired by chewing-gum-covered sidewalks (in a way that’s surprisingly tasteful). The restaurants and bars are all chic and design-conscious and coordinate with the feel of the hotel as a whole. The lobby bar has a moody modern vibe with sleek wood bench seating, brown leather bar stools, a concrete bar, and brass accents. A lobby reading room offers industrial chandelier lighting and floor-to-ceiling shelving filled with books and curiosities. With its proximity to Copenhagen sights and trendy on-site bar and restaurants, this is a hot spot for leisure travelers and couples, though plenty of business guests use the hotel as well.

Conveniently located in the Latin Quarter, a five-minute walk from Rådhuspladsen and Strøget

Hotel SP34 is the corner building on a charming street in the trendy Latin Quarter of central Copenhagen, and it shares the road with several bars, restaurants, and shops. Plenty of attractions are in walking distance, too; guests can walk to City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) and the start of the popular Strøget pedestrian street in just five minutes. Tivoli fairgrounds, the National Museum of Denmark, and Copenhagen’s Central Station (Kobenhaven H) are all in walking distance -- the later has extensive city, regional, and international train service. Private and valet parking are available, but cost an extra fee.

Rooms

Modern, minimalistic rooms with electric kettles and free Wi-Fi -- but no air-conditioning

The style of the rooms mirrors the hotel's decor in smaller measure. It’s simple but modern with a minimalistic Scandinavian air, but some guests find the design a bit basic for a luxury property. Economy and standard rooms are small (as is typical in Copenhagen) and feature hardwood floors and furniture, white bedding, and gray walls and curtains. Exposed lightbulbs create an industrial vibe and a few unique accents -- the curved wooden headboards, for example -- add dramatic flair. Even small rooms contain petite bedside tables with reading lamps, small desks or sitting areas, and 40-inch flat-screen TVs, though there’s little storage space. Cool bathrooms are fully tiled in gray and white and feature boxy modern sinks and curtain-less wet-room style showers. (Some guests complain that wet-room style showers leaves the whole bathroom soggy.) Bathrooms are stocked with REN Clean Skincare individual toiletries and have hairdryers. Each room also come with a safe, iron and ironing board, electric kettle, and free Wi-Fi. Suites are more spacious and may include a couch, a separate soaking tub, and a minibar, plus extra services that aren’t usually standard with the room rate (such as free parking and breakfast). Street-facing rooms, especially on lower floors, may get street noise. There is no air-conditioning.

Features

Trendy, design-conscious restaurants and bars, 24-hour room service, and free Wi-Fi

Hotel SP34’s restaurants and bars stand above the typical hotel venues -- the street-facing venues are lively and popular and host to more than just hotel guests. Work In Progress is a Mediterranean tapas and wine bar; Cock’s & Cows serves cocktails and American burgers; and Din Nye Ven is a combination coffee shop and bar a few steps from the hotel that also serves up sandwiches and hosts events including art exhibitions and poetry readings. The hotel’s lounge bar has a daily Wine Hour, where guests are offered a free glass of wine. But the organic breakfast, which includes classic buffet dishes as well as cooked-to-order options, does not come standard with the room rate, and some guests find it pricey. The hotel also has conference facilities with a 25-seat private cinema, a lobby library lounge, a small gym, and a rooftop terrace. Wi-Fi is available throughout, and the hotel offers 24-hour room service. Some guests complain, however, that service feels too standard for a four-pearl property. For example, guests are expected to carry their own luggage.
